Panajev is going love this:

Tidbits from the "Game Industry Rumors" special feature in this week's Famitsu, a feature they tend to print about once a year or so where they ask what's up with certain games/rumors to the executives directly involved:

- What's up with the PS3?:
We're deliberately not releasing any information right now so we can continue to advance our PS2 business. All we can say right now is that we're investing 200 billion yen towards establishing a mass-production line for the Cell chip.

Sony plans to inject nine billion yen into ST Liquid Crystal Display (ST LCD) to build an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) production line with a monthly capacity of 300,000 2-inch-equivalent-panels, according to Bloomberg.

The line is scheduled to begin producing LTPS (low-temperature poly-silicon) TFT substrate-based OLED displays for mobile devices, including mobile phones and digital cameras, next spring.

ST LCD, a joint venture involving Sony and Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, is a major LTPS TFT LCD producer.

Bingo.

doesn't mean that any one of those (aka ps3) will be a success . Just that if they do put cell in everything (and they want too) they will make the money back.

Which is why I said bingo. It's foolproof.
well i dunno about that . The chip could be buggy as hell. Someone else can have something faster and cheaper. The world could end.

Foolproof in the way that Sony is going to get their money back no matter what ;)

But yes, it could be buggy as hell I admit that, although I'm sure IBM has things under control :)

i dunno they could hire me and then god help sony

OLED or no I'm sure PSP will have excelent screen quality. Right now Sony is making some of the best transflective screens that I've seen in handhelds.

This also ads credence to the rumour of PSP being priced a few good $$ more than GBASP. That's alot of money just for R & D of LCD's. Sony really needs to throw some big bucks at the battery useage / disk drive situation. I've read the PSP will be from $199.00 to $279.00. While I dont see it being 'that' much I don't think it will be priced in direct competition with GBASP, but more inline with portable DVD's etc. This could be seen as a very good thing for Nintendo and Sony as well.

It's biggest competitor isn't GBA, but N-Gage ;)
Sony can sell PSP's at any price with it's PR 8)

Actually, using OLED would dramatically cut down power usage (wile significantly improving the display quality at the same time). But as I said, Sony need to get a license from Kodak (or wait several years until their patents expire).

There is small problem with Sony's OLED plans: As of now, they haven't come to Kodak for license.

Hehe, they don't need to. As it is they've already shown off 13" and 24" prototype displays. Anyways the Kodak "camp" owns most of the patents surrounding small-molecule OLEDs. Sony's work has been primarily with polymer OLEDs which fall under the Cambridge "camp's" IP. The nice thing about polymer OLED technology is that it's relatively dirt cheap to manufacture compared to small-molecule OLEDs...

Humm, the way I understood it, Kodak still has some ground-level patents that all OLEDs are subject to (some of which expire in the next 24 months, hence the rush to sell as many licenses as possible). I used to work for Kodak and still keep in touch with people there - and that's what they've been telling me. Next time I see someone I’ll ask for more specific info.
