Over 1/3 of software sold in 2003 was pirated

Piracy can never be curbed until the pirated product is worse than the real one which is not the case with softwares.

if you would take out the legal software purchases of corporations and small businesses.. it would be much higher..

there is just 2 or 3 guys at work that i know who actually BUY their games and progs (except ms office off course, everybody pirates that)

I'm surprised it's not more than 1/3 actually... Well, it probably IS more, except the others didn't BUY their pirated $h!t. :)

Piracy would become MUCH less of a problem if softcos and game manufacturers cut their prices by around 33.333333333%.

Prices should get cheaper instead of higher.

54.99$ for doom 3 is a ripp off.

How is it on a platform that has no licenesing fees the games cost more than games on consoles that do have a license fee .

That does annoy me.. they're making an extra $5 on this one, but what they don't realize is that if they were to cut back on software (especially games and *cough* operating systems) prices by about $20, a whole lot more people would buy it. [of course, if they jack the price up, and less people buy, they'll blame piracy and cry to some senators... waaahh, look how much our product is being "stolen" :? (RIAA anyone?)]

EDIT: forgot to mention that even though I won't like (paying for) it, I'll purchase D3 anyway

EDIT2: also would like to point out that I used to pirate everything. Before I got a job, and had no money, I couldn't afford any games or certain OSes, so I downloaded them (probalby the past 4 years or so)... that in itself changes the whole "look how much money we're losing to piracy" thing; I had no money and you wouldn't have gotten any of it anyway, so you didn't lose anything.

I really thought SeriousSam was going to change the way games were priced a bit, I thought they had the right idea. (And I bought every SS game, how can you not for $20?)

And its funny, I would've paid $40 for each one, I enjoyed them so much... Can't wait till SS2 :D

I checked out the demo for SS2, but decided not to buy it because I couldn't stand all the spelling/grammatical errors in the in-game text and didn't want to risk they would still be there in the final product.

Okay, the devs are from eastern europe, but JESUS, they can still get someone from the outside to proof-read the crappy storyline they've written can't they?

Software shouldnt be sold the same way as hardware. A billion people using your software doesnt take any higher development cost than a thousand. So why artificialy limit people from having access to it. They should realy start a new system for it. The same goes for music movies and books ofcource. The hardware part of it could still be pay per use (like server and bandwidth use or whatever is necessary for other ways delivering it).
They could even include the intellectual property of all products in such a new system.
But ofcource this probably is hard to do in this primitive capitalist system, especialy considering the mentality of most people.

ps: about the cost of intenet use, does it cost an isp anything for being connected? I would think the only thing that determines your cost to them is total download and upload use. I have to pay the same standard price as people who use the whole monthly allowed volume of 15gbyte while i only use less than 1gbyte.
Another stupid thing they do is offer different top speeds at different prices, i would think as long as you dont download more with the higher speed the total usage of there system and cost to them is the same.
Its realy rediculous how they artificialy make everything worse for stupid marketting reasons.

I spent $90 in Thailand for $10 games, like Far Cry, Joint Operations, Battlefield 1942, etc (all real, just with thai manuals), but I've spen $0 recently in the US. I ain't paying $50 for a game. Not worth it.

u gotta bring that loving over here .

Anyway do u know how many pc games i would buy if they were 30$ each ?

I don't know about u guys but not only do i need to spend 500$ every two months on just the video card but then to pay 50$ a game leaves me pretty high and dry esp while paying for my new back.

So now I don't really buy games . So even if they reduce piracy there will be those who can't buy them anyway. So the numbers wont change as much as they believe
