Olympics, some links

I still can't believe that the British 4x100m relay team beat the US! Absolutely amazed! Especially given that none of the Brits even qualified for the 100m final.

Well done to the US for getting most medals, though. If you look at the medals table you'll see there's quite a strong correlation between economic and military power and medals, which is interesting. I was suprised how well Japan did, though.

All in all a very enjoyable Olympics and a credit to the Greeks for being good hosts. Having been in Greece this summer, though, I can attest to how hot it gets there. It amazes me how anyone can perform in those conditions, frankly!

did you see what happened to the brazillian runner. I hope they beat the shit out of that guy.

I was there in July and it was in the low 30's in the shade. Maybe that is tame to you in Brazil, but to a pale white boy from rainy England it's bloody hot! I just found it sapped all my energy - I literally couldn't have run for 30 seconds without collapsing. The only event I would have done was swimming :)

Bloody hot for me is the low 40´s in the shade, sometimes it happens in the summer in Rio de Janeiro city.

Today was a sunny winter day in my town (middle 20´s). :) Good for some exercises.

come on guy
China = 1.5 billion ppl 31 gold
Japan = 220 million ppl 16 gold
Australia = 20 million ppl 17 gold 16 silver

How come no one impress with Australia when they ranked 4 in the world but with a population of a Tokyo

Just imagine the silver turn into gold (half a chance u know, but it can be the other way around too.) then we'll we kick the usa ass. hahahaha

Go aussie go :p

Australia's atheletes are most definitely impressive.

I watched the entire men's marathon today and it was a very exciting event. It is very tragic what happened to the Barzilian runner who was in 1st. The guy in the kilt just came out of nowhere and ruined the whole event for him. I'm glad to see the runner still got a bronze, but it is a shame that this had to happen. He was the leader of the pack for a major portion of the race. I still think in the end he may have lost to the Italian runner, but not so sure about the American who placed silver.

It is a combination of several factors. We don't have any sports culture as such. No one takes sports seriously as there is hardly any future (monetary) in it. Everyone wants to be a cricketer as that is where the money and glamour is. Then socially also we are not a sports savy society. There is a saying in Hindi which means something like "If you study you'll have a successful career but if are into sports then you 'll spoil your career".

Then over the years we failed to adopt new modern training methods and as a result we slipped further (we were semi-finalist (football) in 1952(?) olympic, we won seven consective olympic golds from 1928-1956(?) in field hockey, we were an asian force during 60s). Also bec'se of ever prevalent curruption, politicisation (every sport federation is run by a politician who is there since decades). Most of sportspersons are from poor families and unless they get govt support they can't do much and a rich doesn't need to be a sportsperson, he/she goes to some hi-fi university in US/EU and gets some hi-fi job.

I hate politicians! o_O

Today morning I read in newspaper that the Brazilian runner was in 1st place when that incident took place and as a result he lost pace and finished 3rd. Disgusting. o_O

Oh, Australia did brilliantly, no doubting it. But after Sydney Olympics this wasn't much of a suprise, as Australia has a good reputation for sport. Plus I guess all that convict DNA must give you good running genes :p

Looks like Lima is now confortable with the result: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/athletics/3622374.stm

De Lima said of Horan: "I bear no rancour at all. I feel no begrudgery against the man who stopped me."

He accepted an apology from Horan's brother Dan, adding; "This is the path that God has chosen for me.

"I look forward to meeting the Horan family and will give them a hug."

Heck, my ex-country - Hungary, BTW finished on top of the dope list :LOL: - got 8 golds (total of 10 but 2 have been taken back) which is pretty impressive from a 9-10 million country.

OFF
Regarding doping: this chasing was ridiculous, they made a full hunting season against this small country in heavy athletics despite the fact the IAAF's general secretary is Hungarian (Istvan Gyulai of IAAF)... o_O :cry: Besides this did you guys notice that usually poor or small countries been caught often, huge and rich countries very rarely, they almost always clean? :rolleyes:
It's so pathetic. :rolleyes:

ON
Yeah: http://www.athens2004.com/ - they had extensive result tables...
