NOA press release for North American sales.

It's a Hand-Held Holiday as Shoppers Snap Up 500,000 Nintendo DS Units

Dec 01, 2004

Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube Also Post Big Numbers

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 1, 2004 -- Shoppers spent Thanksgiving week stuffing their shopping bags with Nintendo hardware, setting the stage for 2004 to be the year of the hand-held holidays. Shoppers snapped up more than 500,000 Nintendo DS systems during Thanksgiving week, representing more than 90 percent of all units available in stores across the United States.

With Nintendo DS sales moving faster than anticipated, some locations have reported sellouts, and Nintendo predicts the initial North American supply will be depleted within days. As additional shipments are rushed to stores by this weekend to meet the demand, Nintendo expects to sell 1 million Nintendo DS units in North America alone by the end of 2004 – a mark that took Apple's iPod 19 months to achieve.

"Consumers have voted the Nintendo DS as the hot item this holiday, so if you see one, you'd better buy it," says Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales & marketing. "Nintendo owns the hand-held market, and once again we're the hit of the holiday season."

Nintendo's other hand-held system, Game Boy Advance, also soared during the holiday weekend. Nintendo sold more than 800,000 Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Advance SP units during the past week. The combined 1.3 million Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance units sold last week set a new one-week sales record for hand-held systems. And the Game Boy Advance line remains on track to be the best-selling hardware line of the year.

Nintendo GameCube also posted impressive numbers. The special bundle of a Nintendo GameCube and a Mario Kart: Double Dash!! game has sold more than 250,000 units since its introduction in mid-November.

Nintendo DS is revolutionizing video games by providing players completely new ways to interact with their games. The sharp, angular, silver-and-black dual-screened system comes with a stylus and features a touch screen, voice control and wireless communication. Nintendo DS, available now at an MSRP of $149.99, represents a third, distinct product line for Nintendo, along with Game Boy Advance SP and Nintendo GameCube. Nintendo DS comes packaged with both a free, embedded PictoChat communication program, and a playable demo of Metroid Prime Hunters with both single-player and multiplayer modes.

Regarding Japan, keep in mind that preorders for NDS were over 2 million.

That DS press release looks familiar. ;)

"BLOCKBUSTER" LAUNCH FOR NINTENDO VIRTUAL BOY

Explosive Sales, Rental for 3-D Video Game System

REDMOND, Wash., Sept. 18, 1995 -- In less than one month on the market, Nintendo's new Virtual Boy 3-D home video game system is already sold out at many retail locations, and 40,000 people a day across the country are clamoring to test the system in a joint rental promotional program with Blockbuster Video and NBC.

More than 100,000 units of the world's first true three-dimensional home game system were shipped within a week of its August 21st national launch. Many retail locations have already exhausted their allotments. "It's a huge hit," says Pete Roithmayr, merchandise director of specialty retailer Electronics Boutique. "We're ecstatic."

Blockbuster Video and Nintendo expect that more than one million people will test the system in the first four weeks of its promotion, which allows consumers either to rent Virtual Boy and a choice of two games for three evenings for $9.99; or to immediately test the system on site with specially designed interactive units at 3,000 Blockbuster locations nationwide. Those renting the unit receive a coupon for $10 off Virtual Boy's MSRP of $179.95 redeemable at any Nintendo authorized dealer.

According to Ted Innes, vice president, marketing at Blockbuster, "This is the most successful partner program in the game area we've ever done. People are really excited about Virtual Boy."

"We knew we had an outstanding project, but faced a real hurdle in showing it to people," says Mark Westcott, Nintendo consumer and trade promotions manager. "But because of the true 3-D images, we couldn't demonstrate the visuals to our players if we relied solely on traditional two-dimensional print or television advertising. By tying Virtual Boy in one promotion with both the national retail presence of Blockbuster, and the hip prime-time programming of NBC, we've found a way to generate excitement and sampling behind this truly unique game system."

Virtual Boy is a RISC-based, 32-bit system using two high-resolution, mirror-scanning LED (light emitting diode) displays to produce a 3-D experience immersing players into their own private universe of high-resolution red images against a deep, black background. The 3-D effect is enhanced with stereophonic sound and a new double grip controller that accommodates multi-dimensional spatial movement.

Yeah but VB caused people to have seizures and eye strain. ;)

That press release looks similar to the one for GBA SP too. ;)

The GB numbers show it dominating the handheld market. The VB/DS numbers show they are niche products.

Wrong. NDS launch numbers supassed SP launch numbers. I wasn't talking about THAT press release above where SP dominates. ;)

500K in a week in North America alone isn't niche. 250K in one day in Japan alone isn't a niche

Nice try though. Get back to me when NDS reaches 5 million units in the next year. ;)

I'm willing to bet you won't be back though. ;)

I'll mark my calender. You'd better start saving if you're going to buy a million all by yourself.

Don't worry. I'll make sure to remind you when it sells 5 million units then 10 million units just like the GBA and GBA SP. While I'm saving for those 1 million NDS units, I'll make sure to put aside a little chump change for additional rolls of tinfoil for you.

This is good to hear. :D

As usual, the GBA continues to do remarkably well.

Very impressive indeed. :D

I hope Europe gets a decent launch (titles, price, marketing, enough units to meet demand), I am eagerly waiting to pre-order my Nintendo DS. :)

Indeed, Chotan Hitofude, Sawaru made in Wario and Mario can do fine for me at launch. [You better listen Nintendo!]

Whats Meteos Release date?

Gleemax, you talk about VB and DS numbers apparently showing they are niche products vs GBA numbers. Selling over 90% of total stock (550,000 units) is certainly anything but an indication of niche status. But by all means post the cold hard stats to illustrate your point (launch numbers for VB, DS and GBA)? I think you'll find they make a mockery of your comments.

If the DS is at 5M by MArch, it will be ok, but launch figures are hardly representative of the console fate.

The DC had a pretty huge launch for its time.

I believe the virtual boy sold out of its initial shipment(of 1 million) quite fast...but I'm not sure if it's a joke but I heard half of those were returned within a year, and of course additional shipments(or probably just shipment) didn't sell.

Virtual Boy=1.4 million ww
GBA did 650k in its first day apparently.

The GBA SP conversely only did only 114k in its first week according to Media Create's numbers. (shortages reported however)
The GBA SP did 365k from Feb 13th to the end of Feb.

230k on day 1, with only 500k shipped. How do you like the taste of them apples Kleemax? (credit to Darth Wufei & Anihawk for obtaining legitimate numbers) And wait until the real quality software starts to hit the market, as only 2 of the NA launch titles were true quality IMO. Goemon looks heavenly.

Interesting to note, I know that 2 million+ copies sold of DQVIII out of 3 million shipped? (correct me if I'm wrong) But I never expected any DS software titles to displace it so soon, albeit even temporarily.

It is also interesting to see that 8 out of 10 games were on Nintendo handhelds. It will not last, but I'm always amazed how poor the games sells in Japan on play2 when you take into account the 15M (or more) consoles sold.

Beside FF, WE, or DQ, most games did not sell to more than 1-2% of the userbase.
