MS promotion going all out!

As one of the very few londoners here, i think i should report this very interesting thing.

We have a paper here in London called Metro. It's a free paper and basically everyone who uses the Tube reads it, as long as you can get their hands on a copy, usually after it's been read by someone else who left it on the train. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of people every morning can read this paper freely on their way to and from work.

Anyway, today i get on the tube and open the paper to see that it's been practically taken over by MS and X360 adverts.

Seriously, every single page was at least 50% occupied by an X360 advert, from Gears of War (launching today here) to any other game the 360 has. Adverts like "100 next gen games NOW" and "Next gen is here NOW", and some about the HDDVD player, playing on being your way to watch HD movies "affordably". Of course any article the paper might have had about the crazy PS3 launch in the US (Which actually wasn't there at all) would have been totally overshadowed by the presence of these adverts.

And funniest thing was the last page, at the back. It was taken up by a green slot with (in Christmassy font): Merry Xbox. Obviously playing on the fact that this Xmas, X360 is your only way to get next gen gaming.

Amazing. If MS keep it up like this in the coming months, i think Sony will really have a big problem. This kind of advert overload will eventually get into people's heads.

Personally, after the third page of massive Xbox360 adverts i was thinking "Desperate much?!", but well i'm in marketing and i know full well what they're doing :D And it's good for them.

Wow even IGN reported this!

Microsoft Takes Over Metro
Free London paper swamped with Xbox 360 ads.
by Alex Simmons, IGN UK

UK, November 17, 2006 - Emergence Day has well and truly hit London, with adverts and promotions for Gears of War almost consuming the capital's free newspaper Metro. The paper, which is distributed in tube and train stations all over the city, has Xbox 360 featured on an incredible 48 pages out of a total of 64, from ads for Gears of War, Viva Pinata and Call of Duty 3, a page promoting the HD-DVD drive and our personal favourite, a centre-spread pullout 2007 calendar starring the scantily clad girls of Dead of Alive Xtreme 2. Even the small ads have been 'Geared', the bloody GoW stamp seeping through the pages.

Same thing here in cold-as-hell Helsinki, Finland.

EDIT: Perhaps they just cut back on marketing until now and spent the rest of '06 marketing budget in one day ;)

It would seem to me that it was a fairly obvious attempt to play on the resentment/jealousy/regional pride of Euro gamers that those #$#@ Yanks are playing their PS3's today. . . "Sony may hate you, but we were here on day 1, and look at all the goodies you could be doing now rather than waiting for those $%#@ that've treated you like second class citizens!"

Absolutely. And the last "Merry Xbox" at the back was the confirmation.
Heck, if i had the money and i didn't have LOADS to do for college, added to work and erm... fun.. i would buy a 360 just for the eye candy.

With the exception of a Wii shortage, MS has everything lined up for them this holiday season. If they cant figure out how to capitalize now, you have to question how successful they really can be this gen.

EDIT: l-b did they drop any Halo 3 propaganda in there as well?

Nope, no Halo3 that i can see, although there were some adverts for games that are not out yet, like Lost Planet.

Given the supply situation, they could almost pull the same prank in the U.S.

They could but it would be harder as PS3 does have a presence in the US (shops with kiosks) even if you just can't get one. In the UK it's just non-existant. Shops like Game even took off the "Pre-Order" posters they used to have.

Just looked through the copy on my colleagues desk.

It is a rather spectacular advertisement effort, it has to be said.

Reminds me of some Dreamcast's adverts when there was some working in SEGA that is now working in MS.
The first time that technique was not very succesful, I wonder what's going to happen this time :p

I think there was a 360 ad on the tv last evening, but I haven't seen any of it because I was in the kitchen, doing kitcheny stuff.

London, we have a Cardiff version of the Metro also and its plastered with 360 stuff also. Seems this is the first of a big push through to Xmas. Slightly off topic, I was told by local GAME manager that if I wanted a HD-DVD that I should pre-order one ASAP as they have been surprised by the volume of pre-orders they have received. Then I had a phone call a couple of days ago from saying that pre-orders have been stopped becasue they think they have gone way over what the allocation is likely to be, in the Cardiff store alone they have 35 pre-orders.

Speaking of 360 ads I saw one today that made me lauigh. It was an ad for the 360 with a game at £299.99 and PES6 free and at the bottom it said "HD gaming starts at £199.99". The £199.99 360 is the basic model which doesn't include component cables and therefore can't display HDTV resolutions

That's interesting. Those things are only good for playing HD DVD movies, aren't they?

So you came up with some wildly inventive "yeah but X360 reminds me a lot of Dreamcast" style retort... You are, of course, completely wrong in that.
No, I came up with this thing which reminds me of past behaviours, that's it. is it a similar strategy? Yes, it is, period. Everything you added comes from your brain, not from mine.
Stop reading other ppl mind cause you're not good at this.
