mid-level OpenGL card recommendation

I'm new here, first post. Building a new machine for the home to do some architectural CAD, rendering and general stuff. What is the consensus on OpenGL cards in the mid-price range ($500 or less)?

Quadro4 cards appear to dominate but I can't keep up with the latest flavors, is the 750 or 980 XGL a better deal than the FX500? The Fire GLX-1 looks like similar performance for more $. Any Wildcat VP fans out there? I've had good luck with Elsa Synergy and Gloria-XL long ago (boy did they go fast), not so good with ATI (we use the consumer cards at work, drivers are a little flakey), I've also had a good experience with 3Dlabs Oxygen in the past but have no idea whether Creative Labs is going to keep up in what appears to be a two chip race. I'd love to hear some opinions from those more informed :?

Thanks

Why not pick up a cheap 9700 Pro and use hacked drivers? You get exactly the same performance for a lot cheaper :)
