Patent:
http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-....WKU.&OS=PN/6,727,830&RS=PN/6,727,830

oh man, this is a joke!! We've been using the mouse to point and click ever since it was invented!! So, are we going to pay micro$oft $$ if we make a product that uses "double-clicks"? :devilish:

Come on!! How did the patent office end up giving the patent to Microsoft?
Don't they ever read the submissions to the patent office?

I wouldn't be surprised if they start applying for patents for "single-button" clicks and using trackballs are a pointing device.

Patenting double-click?

I thought that anything too simple, obvious or in public domain could not be patented???

and I should apply for a patent of my special way to drink water... so I might be able to charge anyone a pence when he does so... I mean we have to protect IP.

Microsoft has also patented FAT (File Allocation Table) as well and somewhere on its site it talks about how you can acquire licence from them to use *old* FAT technology!

Sure microsoft can have the double click but when British Telecom tried to stake ownership of the hyperlink everyone gets mad with them...

MSFT must have the best lawyers in the world... I guess BT's fault is that it's a British company...

No. not FAT per se but , I think, the way of having long filenames with FAT. Whether that is novel is another matter.

Are you sure about that?
Here is the link:
http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/ip/tech/fat.asp

To quote from Microsoft's website:
"Microsoft is offering to license its FAT file system specification and associated intellectual property. With this license, other companies have the opportunity to standardize the FAT file system implementation in their products, and to improve file system compatibility across a range of computing and consumer electronics devices."

Doesn't sound like long filenames to me!

This infact makes me mad :devilish: since we have been using it ever since the first DOS came out. Now, Microsoft decides to patent it!

I think you have to look at the actual patent. I think that's what was said on slashdot ages ago

oh.. i forgot the licensing part:
"Currently, Microsoft offers two specific types of licenses:

A license for removable solid state media manufacturers to preformat the media, such as compact flash memory cards, to the Microsoft FAT file system format, and to preload data onto such preformatted media using the Microsoft FAT file system format. Pricing for this license is US$0.25 per unit with a cap on total royalties of $250,000 per manufacturer.
A license for manufacturers of certain consumer electronics devices. Pricing for this license is US$0.25 per unit for each of the following types of devices that use removable solid state media to store data: portable digital still cameras; portable digital video cameras; portable digital still/video cameras; portable digital audio players; portable digital video players; portable digital audio/video players; multifunction printers; electronic photo frames; electronic musical instruments; and standard televisions. Pricing for this license is US$0.25 per unit with a cap on total royalties of $250,000 per licensee. Pricing for other device types can be negotiated with Microsoft. "

This company is finding ways to create more revenue!!
