Market share amongst enthusiasts:

My theory is that the MadOnion "scoreboard" is a reasonably good measure of the purchasing decisions of enthusiasts. Anyone sufficiently interested in the performance of their video card to download 3dmark and submit their result obviously isn't a dedicated office user.

The results, by manufacturer, break down as follows:

NVIDIA: 79%
ATI: 16%
PVR: 1%

Obviously NVIDIA has the advantage of having introduced a new product line most recently. But I'm still rather surprised by how skewed the results are.

Have I overlooked another source of bias?

And form of poll or demographics only conclusively shows the result of said demographic, and with no relation to reality.

Obviously, if you wanted to prove "racism is alive" in the US, you'd simply go to deep south and take votes door to door and post something like "70% of Americans polled have a racial bias" or similar. Just like the Half-Life/Counterstrike polls done- which showed a landslide of Voodoo3 and GF/MX users for that game.

In the case of MadOnion, it doesnt surprise me that of the demographic of "hardware zonkies that compete on a playfield specifically interested in just how many points a benchmark can possibly achieve using time clock adjustments, registry tweaks to approximate as close to wireframe as allowable, and liquid-cooled overclocked PC gear"- that 79% of this demographic would be NVIDIA users. Their cards score extremely well, have registry tweaks for days to reduce details to absurd levels, and overclock to the moon.

If there was a "VideoMark"- a benchmark that has a photorealistic rendering and scores were based on how close the rendered version came to the photorealistic version, you'd likely get an entirely different demographic.

How do Geforce2 MX users fit into this demographic?

He forgot kids on a budget.
Actually judging from the few times I've visited their forum, most seem to be hardware interested kids. Lots of those don't have too much money to throw around, and apart from the Kyro for a short while, and the 8500 right now, nVidia has pretty consistently had the best 3DMark/$ ratio.

Entropy

Why an enthusiast has to be hung up with 3dmark juvenile pissing contests is beyond me.

If you're "old", rich and intelligent you have others to drive for you heh ;)

I really think you need to take the polls at Madonion.com with a grain of salt (a whole salt shaker???).

I bet if you ran a poll on this site and even many other sites, you would not get nearly that high a percentage of Nvidia.

I place no faith in internet polls whatsoever.

MadOnion's database isn't a poll.
