Little nuggets of engineering JOY

My folks just got a new printer - an Epson Stylus C62. I notice some clever bastit has thought of slightly curving the output tray so that the first piece of printed paper becomes longitudinally rigid enough to support the weight of the second etc etc... the result being you can get away with a very short tray that can handle a sizeable stack of paper. It's almost gravity-defying to look at.

I'm a sucker for this kind of thing and just *had* to mention it ("normal" people don't understand!!!) - such a simple idea, yet so effective.

I'll get my coat...

And there was I thinking I was the outright winner of the "Saddo Of The Week" award. :D

No problem. It's clever, but what if the printer is put where it doesn't have enough clearance for that first page out? Scratch one print. :) I like HP's DJ design, with the feed and output trays both in front--no question of how much space you'll need, and no need for extra vertical space.

Still, I'm willing to share in MuFu's joy at clever solutions. :D

Alright, Mu, now I want to know what that notice affixed to the front of the printer says. :)

How is the noise level? My friend has a similar printer and it's loud as a mofo.

Well, I'm not much of a noise level expert (although I do play drums), but it's the quietest printer we've had to date. Quieter than a couple of old Canon bubblejets we've owned, quieter than an HP OfficeJet LX, much quieter than the Stylus Color 600 that preceeded it and again, much quieter than my current printer, a Stylus Colour 680. The nice thing is that our neighbour works for Epson so we get free branded cartridges!

Hah! I asked my dad about that yesterday... it says something like "Notice: The blah blah bottom margin is 14mm according to the manual blah blah blah etc, but it is in fact 12.5mm". Totally useless information, although he said that the day he pulls it off he'll forget about it and screw up some important document. My dad is going to be 50 next year and it shows.

Hey, I set that printer up downstairs on the parent's computer.

And my Mum is 50 this year. Scary coincidences folks.

I've just bought a Epson CX5200 with the built in scanner, I think that's built around the C62 engine and it incredibly noisy when it loading paper but almost silent went it's printing. And the quality is pretty fantastic too!

Actually, you have a point. They are pretty noisy when loading paper - definitely worse than the latest HPs in that respect.
