Lack of blue laser diodes responsible for manufacturing delay

I guess this is affecting HDDVD manufacturing too, then. Only difference is that, unlike Sony, Toshiba doesn't need to get 4 million HDDVD players out of the door by March...

Well if that turns out to be true, I bet the European launch will be delayed till late next year.

Nah, that would be too much. If they delay it, it won't be until LATE next year. I'd say March. But i don't think it will be delayed. I think at this point they rather release the PS3 and not-meet supply than delay. At the end of day, people will complain about lack of PS3's anyway so it won't change much for them. But if they delay again, it would be a whole new level of complaints and "doom and gloom" reports.

Yeah, we Europeans are used to supply limited launches. I mean last time it took several months until they finally caught up with demand. So in the public eye having fewer units is generally the lesser evil compared to launching latter.

You are right, but then kaz harai went out and said "it's soooo not true" and today/yesterday his taiwanese contrators stepped up and say "well we're not to blame as the parts just aren't there" and... whatever.

You're nuts. Why on earth would they delay to LATE next year:?:

They're not delaying period, they've already set a launch date for chrissakes despite knowing of a (rumored) parts shortage.

Wow easy on the insults there. That's the way the did it with the psp (delayed till march, then delayed till september) afaik. So there is a precedent. In the other interview, scee's ceo already alluded that europeans are way more price sensitive than japanese/us buyers, so they probably don't expect to make large inroads to the european market before their first price cut(s) anyway.

Seeing how the biggest profit margins Sony makes is from the European markets (what with the inflated prices due to silly conversion rates), i think they're the first ones to want to launch here as soon as they possibly can! :D

4 million before the end of this year was thier plan. However I think most sensible people realized that was a bunch of bunk and they'd never achieve that number. There's always component shortages or problems when manufacturing new tech or new hardware. htis is nothing new.

I would honestly be suprised if they manage to make 1 million units of PS3 before the end of the year.

I thought they changed the forecast to 4 million? Either way, i won't get my hands on one for a looong time anyway so it's not much of a difference.

4mill by calendar year, 6 mill by fiscal year(march).

I think they'll be lucky to get 4million out the door by March to be honest. And they better hope those BR drives are pretty solid, or it will be 360 all over again with massive amounts of returned units.

I'm very skeptical the PS3 will launch at all this year. Sony will probably delay it until March 2007 Japan, and Holiday 2007 for North America and Europe.

One of the reasons I make this conslusion is the status of the Operating System has been reported that it isn't finalized in the developer kits and online documentation is lacking.

If I understand the reports correctly, everyone else but Sony is having problems receiving enough blue laser diodes precisely because Sony, who is one of the major producers, is stockpiling them in order to meet PS3 launch inventory targets.

If I underdtand this report correctly, the OEM manufacturers in Japan and China are claiming the BR diodes and CELL processors are both in short supply.

And if I understand things correctly, it'd probably be a breach of confidentiality on behalf of OEM manufacturers to talk about specific component shortages. I don't really think they'd do that, so let's just say that any such rumors are likely to have other, less reliable origins...
