Jobless rate slips, payrolls still weak

Apparently only 1,000 new jobs were created in December while the jobless rate dropped to 5.7%. Why? More and more people officially left the job pool. In what seems to me to be quite anachronistic, the government doesn't count everyone who is unemployed and of working age in its surveys. It only counts those who are actively searching for work as unemployed.

When I read that, my heart jumped. That would have been great news for my Uncle, his Wife, and their two kids. Sigh.
