"Hurricane Ivan, one of the fiercest Atlantic storms recorded, grew even more powerful and headed toward Cuba Monday after pummeling the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Grenada on a track that eventually will bring it to the U.S. coast.

The monster storm, its top sustained winds strengthened to near 160 mph (260 kph), tore off roofs and sent sea water surging over the Caymans, a low-lying British territory and offshore finance center that is home to 45,000 people."

There's been many of these horrible storms now, and all within a relatively short time period too. If global warming is indeed a reality, we can only expect them to grow even fiercer and more frequent still as our oceans slowly heat up.

If there's one or even a couple Ivans (or - shudder - Ivan 2.0) a year, how long before people are simply forced out of the areas where these storms strike? After all, you can only rebuild your homes and businesses so many times...

That was a well-argued point you were making there, Joe...

"And just south of hurricane Pyromania, we find there is a region of local high pressure.

And now for our local forecast, we will be having cooler than normal temps this evening, which thanks to the southeasterly winds off the Great Lakes will lead to early morning fog TO THE X-TREME!!!!!!!!!WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! And now to our extended forecast."

Bleh seems to me the increased speeds of hurricanes warrant a cat 6 designation now... 275kph is pretty damn fast...

What is the max speed recorded ever?

Hmm dunno I think one in the 50's was the fastest but Ivan must've come close for sure... Something worth googling...

One in 1938 hit 180 mph...

I haven't seen any news reports of the gulf stream weakening (which is weird if it's true, as news of such an event would be of pretty vital interest in the part of the world where I live). I'm somewhat sceptical of this claim, do you have a link or such?

I wonder how would it feel standing (if possible) on ground when the "eye" of such Hurricane passes by. Why don't we have video recordings when Hurricane is on full swing? News channel always show when it passes by, may be no-one wants to risk his/her life?

ivan had recorded gusts of over 200mph.

In fact, I've been reading lately on a couple of forums about the Gulf Stream signs of being weakening: I could address you to those forums if you like, but I'm afraid they are Italian only. Anyway, those signs are still being studied (mostly based on the ice coverage on the zones where the Gulf Stream "ends" and the salinity variation during the last year in those zones).

No worse argued than yours....so I see you got the point.

If you want to further any "gloom and doom global warming" predictions, try that Politics forum....

Uh, EXCUSE ME?

So by trying to further the discussion rather than simply adding noise like you did, I was not arguing my point? That was the dumbest thing you said in weeks at least, Dr. DeFurious.

What, are you the resident webcop now? Don't tell me what to do, my post was perfectly within the boundaries of both the board and the topic!

And I take it you're one of the sceptics of global warming too, but that figures - most conservative capitalists prefer to cover their eyes and ears when a discussion about how our consumption-based economy might be affecting our global climate.

Humus: May I borrow the trout?

Btw, I think it's rather interesting with the supercar thread. There we're talking about streamlined monsters running at extreme speeds.

But most of them wouldn't catch up with the top speeds of Ivan, and the houses that needs to withstand Ivan is "slightly less" aerodynamic than the supercars.

I find it rather hard to understand how much power there is in such a hurricane. Yes, I know it's powerfull enough to rip off roofs, but I still don't get the feeling of it.

I'd love to sit through a hurricane in a bunker with bulletproof panorama windows. :D
