Interesting Statistics From Steam.

Over 1.2 million copies sold.

318,900 users with ATI 95xx or greater cards (excluding mobility parts)

223,379 users with Nv5xxx cards (excluding mobile versions) becoming 128,667 if you exclude the 5200 series.

If this indicative of the broader market it really shows how much ATI dominated the mid to high end market last generation.
Lots of other interesting stats.

Thanks to WHQL for the link.

Look at all the people running 16bpp color.

I can take 1024x768 and even no AA. But 16bpp.. no way.

1.2 million copies so far... heh that's much better than DIII and coming towards Halo 2 numbers. PC gaming dead - yeah right ;)

but on the other hand it is people who have steam, so it's HL1 players too... I would imagine.

Now how many of those purchased HL2, is a good question, and there must be plenty who have not done the survey either.

Not bad overall.

Intel/Amd is almost 50:50 which is not bad either.

Is this some new survey or the same old one which started running about 3 months ago to all Steam users?

This is the same chart that's always been available at steampowered - even before HL2 was released. The most noticeable stat that's changed is that the Radeon 9800 series is now the most popular video card (replacing the Geforce4mx)

Yeah, I mean looking at the stats there more then half would be running video cards that would suck in HL2. A quick tally shows that about 40% would have acceptable DX9 performing cards. It makes sense that these numbers are more then just HL2 customers.

9800Pro seems to be selling nicely. 27.10 (almost exactly one month ago) GF4MX was still leading the pack with 12.15%. R9800Pro was second with 10.21%.

no way to tell how many choose not to submit the survey, it is optional.
True, but I doubt that NVidia users are inherently less (or more, for that matter) inclined to submitting surveys.

9800 Pros are in real short supply right now :( I think HL-2 must have sold a lot of them. (At least here in the UK.)

Perhaps some are just lazy :D
But yeah, there aint any reason to run at 16-bpp now :/
I vote for laziness :D

That's because HL1/CS default to 16bpp and to get 32bpp you need to add a command-line switch. Many people don't know about that, therefore the number of 16bpp users.

If the development costs claimed by Valve are real (20 to 50 million depending on the sources) than they'll probably need to sell at least 1-2 million copies just to break even, maybe more...

Only, what, another 10X until they're close to a single GTA title? ;)

And GTA has only, what, another 10X until they're close to a single Sims title? ;)

Granted, Sims is an evil, soul-stealing aberation. . . :devilish:

I think for each respective series it's along the lines of ~35 to ~41Million, although The Sims have had a few more products than the GTA series, with the expansions and such. The point was that outlining a single extremely high-profile PC game that "only" sells 2 million to make the point he was making is somewhat short-sighted to say the least. I think if he would look at the distribution of the sales of all games it would show a different story.

The Survey I got asked about the card you used for HL2.

But maybe it still is the same list as for the other games. The 9800Pro and GF4MX were the highest on this list.

What I found really funny, is that there were more people with a ATI Rage Fury MAXX, than with a FX5800 :D
