Improving the 360 controller's DPad - a DIY guide

I stumbled upon this post while reading up on the Castlevania: SOTN thread on NeoGAF.

Basically, by scraping the plastic away from the DPad's inner border, the pad has further to mode, and it's easier to push it in eight unique directions. I've done it myself (with a kitchen knife no less :p) and it took about two minutes to do. There are pics at the link.

Highly recommended.

Wow, I never even thought that might be the issue, but sure enough it works like a charm. Thank you for sharing.

the problem with the 360 dpad is not that inputs doesn't work, it is that you end up pressing wrong buttons.

For example, I thought I press left, it ends up as left-up or left-down. up or down is pressed even if you are seeing yourself only pressing left!!!

Yes. I noticed this a lot with lumines. I had to be like a ninja with the down-presses to make sure it wouldn't accidentally go left as well. Analog stick had much better control but is ultimately too slow. I'm basically back to playing this on the PSP (after getting some good scores and achievements, mind, so I did try ;) ).

Might try this.

Is this after the mod described above, or before? Because the one I linked to in the OP fixes a lot of this. I do recommend trying it out.

JL's link probably is more effective, but scarier for those of us who are worried about permanently breaking stuff ;)

yea I did the knife trick to mine and it worked great.... although I've found I prefer the analog stick for all of the arcade games. it's just more comfortable

The images are gone for the knife trick version, anyone know where else I can find it?

can not find the images but it's a simple as taking a small knife and shaving off just a bit of the white controller basin around the Dpad.

It seems it has a little residual plastic that hinders the movement of the Dpad and once you shave that off (scraping around 360 degrees inside the basin) the Dpad works more accurately

took me about 10 seconds
