I'd KILL for new SNK NEOGEO hardware with ATI VPUs

absolutely kill for it.

there were some hints from the President of Playmore
(who owns SNK/NeoGeo I believe) of new hardware.
not much to go on, but, I would love to see a new NEO GEO.

The Hyper Neo Geo 64 of 1996 or 1997 was pretty pathetic at 3D, not much better than the Playstation1, although it had pretty monsterous 2D ability, rivaling or maybe even surpassing the Saturn (i dont really know tho) .... but obviously it never became a console like the MVS of 1989 became the NeoGeo of 1990.

If SNK/Playmore was to select a graphics provider, it would probably be ATI! who else is on such a role lately. the Nintendo console contract, probably the GBA2 contract (mobile Flipper?) possibly the XBox2 contract and most recently, the SGI Onyx visualization system contract.

I'd love a NEO GEO with 2-4 ATI R300 or R350 VPUs. or 2-4 of any of the upcoming VPUs (R420, R450, R500, etc) with 256 MB of memory each.

that means it could surpass the XBox2 and GC2 in graphics power, much like the NeoGeo surpassed the Genesis and SNES. (the SNES was released after the NeoGeo!)

or at least completely obliterate the PS2, GC and XBox, if it doesnt surpass the next-gen mainstream consoles PS3, XBox2, GC2, depending on the VPUs used in NEO GEO 2 :p

I would actually pay 500-600 bucks for a new negeo and 100 bucks for a game esp if they are the classic 2d fighters tricked out with some of the best 2d hardware ever made. I'd wet my pants for that . Of course i own a neo geo... but my dad wont let me play it all the time cause its his toy :(

although i fail to see where SNK would find the money to do such a thing, considering it would sell 2 units, one for JVD and one for Megadrive0088... why would u want such a thing when current generation hardware are pretty powerful when it comes to 2D graphics.

the only reason we are not seeing any more of those brilliant 2D fighters or any other 2D game like in the days of the NeoGeo is that no one apart from me u and a couple other geeks care about 2D games, not because we don't have a piece of hardware capable of good 2D...

the equivalent of today to those brilliant 2D games on NEOGEO are all the brilliant 3D games on current generation consoles.

If they choose to make an 'home arcade console' with a ridicule price point, they're doomed to fail :/
It's also too soon to launch a handheld neo geo... GBA won't be touched untill PSP...

also, i dont think any manufacturer would be seriously interested on a hi end 2D-only arcade board anyway..... what would be the point when everyone now wants 3D... it would be laughed at.
much better off simulating 2D graphics with 3D hardware, Cell shading can give u much better results and fluidity of animation than sprite-based games will ever be able to.....
u can have a cell shaded version of Samurai Showdown, keeping it strictly 2D but constructed with cell shaded polygons. given the right amount of attention, it would look ace.... and now that i think about it, why hasnt anyone done something like this yet? like, a street fighter game without sprite but with cell shaded graphics.... not talking about the street fighter EX series, which is pretty dull, i'm talking about simulating the good old street fighter 2 with pretty cell shaded graphics. no 3D movement, just good old 2D style fighters...... love them....
Guilty Gear X2 was and is one of the best looking games on PS2 in my opinion, and is one of if not THE best looking sprite-based fighting game ever... wouldnt mind a version of that game on steroids, with particles to rival ZOE2 and cell shaded characters

actually, I wasn't thinking 2D at all, I was thinking 3D. a complete shift.

Hyper Neo Geo 64 tried to do this. more to 3D, but failed miserably. that's why I mentioned VPUs from ATI (or Nvidia i suppose)

'NeoGeo Next' would be to PS2/GC/XBox what the NeoGeo was to the Genesis/TurboGrafx/SNES. although with this generation, it's a bit too late with PS3/Xbox2/GC2 coming.

2D graphics dont need such monsterous hardware.

I was actually thinking of an uber powerful 3D NEOGEO when 3Dfx Rampage was coming. but now ATI makes the most sense.

Need a proper Samurai Showdown 3D ... ahhh I guess Soul Cal 2 will have to do for now :)

What makes you think that SNK's excellent 2D skills would transfer over to 3D?

well they could just make the art and game design and leave the hard work to some good devs to be transferred to 3D.... it COULD be done if they really cared....

london-boy, if you think such a Neo-Geo unit wouldn't sell, go search for NeoGeo on eBay.

Then again, go search for used underwear on eBay.

*Meaning that anything can sell to some freaks, I just can't believe the market is that big.

Saturn is still the most powerful dedicated 2d hardware around. Hyper NG 64 was ok, but nothing I've heard puts it in the same realm as Saturn, Taito F3, or Psykio's SH2 based hardware.

NeoGeo was never a commercial success. But look at the prices the NeoGeo stuff goes for on eBay - and hey, it does sell.

Not all Neo-Geo stuff is expensive ;)
I bet you can buy all sorts of Neo-Geo games/hardware in some shops for just half the Ebay price or less.

The home system was really successful because of it's price, but the arcade unit was pretty popular. I think one of the biggest reasons it didn't do better was because of bootleg cartridges. Those that don't believe it, I'd say about 50% of NeoGeo carts on Ebay and other shops are bootlegs. The games are very easy to copy.

Reznor, I meant the home system, hehehe.

The arcade hardware is everywhere... ^^;

I played far too much Strikers:1945 Plus on my cruise...

The home system and arcade system are the same thing. I have an MVS unit myself. But the home cartridges get copied just as much or more than the arcade carts.
