How to get self_shadow within shadow map?

Shadow map nowadays usually refers to the use of the depth buffer from the light points of view, not the old school demo/game shadow maps where you projected shadows onto textures.

Why do you call that old school? Seems like a lot of recent games (and some games to come) still use projected textures as shadows.

It's not cool anymore :)

Wait.. do pre-made shadows (like those in the game Global Ops, just as an example) count as projected textures, and not dynamically lit?
