That was a very interesting read - just a shame none of volt from nvnews questions got answered - seems Valve were selective in what they choose to answer.

Yeah I was also live in the chat there, was kinda hilarious how Volt got ignored

it is a good news, but i think at least need nv41/rv380 can provide a acceptable frame rate in hl2 with fsaa.

Maybe funny to you.

The whole chat was a total flop. Don't have another word to describe it. To some we look like a bunch of fools now :?

Have a good one.

Well, look at this question:

volt|nvews said:
First question: "On Nvidia's nZone site, they recently implied that Half Life 2 is "The Way It's Meant to be Played" game, by putting their TWIMTBP logo on the same info page that the game is on. Is Half Life 2 being developed in conjunction with Nvidia's TWIMTBP program, and if so, what technical benefits or problems for the engine have Valve developers run into as a result of this program?"

You're asking them about a marketing question implied by nVidia on nVidia's website, rather than a technical question they could answer. I can't see how they could answer a question you base on an inference derived from something you saw on nZone about which they have no knowledge. Apart from purely a marketing program, what is the TWIMTBP program, anyway?

Then there's:

volt|nvews said:
Second question: "It was recently stated by Gary McTaggart that Nvidia cards would be able to perform AA properly on Half Life 2 at the expense of pixel shader bandwidth by using pixel shaders to clamp texture coordinates. If you could estimate, how much of percentage hit would the end user see if this method was employed, assuming Half Life 2's engine was fully optimized for Nvidia's shaders?"

Didn't they state in the chat that "AA on all cards has been fixed"? To that end I wonder if this question is something they could answer, as the remarks you reference pertained to what nVidia could do with its drivers, possibly, which I doubt they could estimate. Also, it may no longer be an issue, apparently.

"What is the scalabilty of the engine (ie min specs to play @ decent level of IQ/LoD) and what resolutions can we expect to play the game off the bat with some of today's high end systems i.e. with 9800pro/5900ultra's?"

I thought this was a question they might have answered. This makes me wonder if there wasn't some kind of technical glitch which precluded them from seeing your questions (although apparently everyone else did.) But if they did see it and elect to ignore it they may have seen it as another marketing-oriented question they didn't want to address, along the lines of "Which will run it better--a 5900U or a 9800P?" Just a theory. I thought it was a decent chat--far from a flop.

Meh, It was funny, and yet it wasn't  WTF was up with the Valve guys? Seemed like they were snubbing you, but perhaps your questions weren't in the vein that they wanted to explore.

Not very professional of them. They could have at least said something like:

We cannot answer this question as of yet or We can't comment on this type thing. That would be totally cool with me.

Was kind of strange. I wonder if lag was a problem. Because none of the questions seemed to be answered in a timely manner.

I have come to a conclusion that they were answering their own questions which they had written before. Don't want to point fingers here but this whole "chat" was very weird

yeah that's what it looked like to me volt. a lot of their "questions" htey answered seemed to be coming from nowhere. I assume they decided beforehand the best types of questions they wanted to, or were willing to answer.

they seemed to concentrate on the engine and mod tools for the entire chat so I guess that was their focus. A lot of the questions from other sources were regarding modding as well.

I really think the whole thing might be answered in that they just didn't see some of the questions asked whereas other people couldn't see some of the questions asked to which they gave answers. Some kind of glitch, IMO...

It looked to me if they couldn't recognise your questions. Did they say only questions form admins accepted?

It was really wierd they didn't acknowledge your questions - even as you say to say they couldn't answer it or wouldn't. As the site says - they will accept follow-up - give them a polite what happened guys and what your want to know and see if they respond.

Chris B. knew about my questions. He even told me to ask them quicker since those guys will go on and never stop. Then he told me they will include the ones they didn't answer in a FAQ

Well they did introduce things with
[18:01] <valve|gaben> To start things off we have some existing questions.
Perhaps they spent longer than they were intending to answering a backlog of FAQs and didn't have time for much interactivity.

Unless they have unpacked all textures or are requiring pixel shaders I can't see how it is fixed on all cards obivously its just some valve PR crap.

Was this on IRC? If you're ever run a live chat, you know how easily it is to get lagged, desynced, and backlogged, especially if people are personally msg'ing the hosts. It was quite clear that the valve employees were responding to either private questions, or expounding on earlier questions in great detail at the time volt asked his questions. There probably weren't even looking at the chat window, but were composing in another window.

Live chats are mostly nonsense. A better way is to just have a special BBS topic and let people compose questions and have them answered in a slow, thoughtful manner.

There was no lag. I've talked to Chris B, and he answered instantly.

Volt,

I too would have liked to see your Qs get answered. Sorry about that :( Heres to hoping that they will get in the FAQ.
