Advisory: XBOX Dashboard local vulnerability
Release Date: 2003/07/04
Last Modified: 2003/07/04
Author: Stefan Esser [se@nopiracy.de]

Application: Microsoft XBOX Dashboard (up to today)
Severity: A vulnerability within the XBOX Dashboard allows to
totally compromise the security features of the XBOX.
Risk: Critical
Vendor Status: Vendor is not willing to talk about XBOX vulnerabilities.

Overview:

The XBOX Dashboard is what appears when you turn the XBOX on without a
disc in the DVD drive. It will let you adjust system settings, manage
your save games, play and rip audio CDs and configure your XBOX Live
account. It is the heart of the XBOX and its most vulnerable point,
because it lacks several security restrictions which are enforced on
games. This includes the lack of the reboot-on-eject-button "feature",
which is obligatory for all games.

The existance of an exploitable vulnerability within the dashboard could
totally compromises the XBOX security system. It will make the box
independent from Microsoft signed code and therefore this information is
released to the public now on the 4th of July 2003, the day of the XBOX
Independence.

Every time I see Jerry Springer or George Bush I become more and more proud that I'm not an American  But have a nice time anyway.

Have fun and all I guess, though I fail to see the reason why Americans in particular feel the need to display their patriotism in EVERY goddamn forum on earth, no matter what the forum's really supposed to be about. :?

This thread needs to be moved to general discussion.

Jealous, no. Slightly annoyed, yes ... to make it easier for you to understand, what would you think would happen, if I would start a thread for a important bank holiday of my none-american country? It would be off-topic and most people wouldn't care less ...

Agree with Grall.

JVD, FWIW, I'm patriotic enough of my own country, and I don't at all mind other people being so of their own (USA or something else). It's good if you like where you live. But *any* independence day celebrations are just plain off topic in the Consoles forum, right? There's the General Discussion for just that sort of stuff, mmkay?

(Essentially, this forum and the whole website is for all kinds of different people from all kinds of different countries and backgrounds to come together to talk about an interest they all share -- 3D graphics in general and consoles in particular in this forum. Nationalism [call it patriotism or whatever else] is sorta counter-productive to this idea, innit?)

But no big problem, tho. You have a nice 4th of July celebration there! ;)

What makes you think I'm "jealous" of your patriotism somehow? Personally, if you ask me, patriotism is an outdated concept that most likely is only lagging religion when it comes to popularity in being used as an excuse to start wars. I'd just as well do away with it entirely, thankyouverymuch.

I don't think it is too much to ask to wonder in your off-topic patriotic celebratory thread in the CONSOLE FORUM (which you have been set to keep free from this kind of garbage), what makes you think the fourth of july has ANY interest or significance whatsoever to people outside the United States.

If there's one thing in particular that annoys me about Americans, it's the self-centered belief some of them has that anything even remotely connected to the US must be interesting to everyone else on this planet and needs to be celebrated, revered, etc simply because it happens to be American. Well sorry to burst your bubble pal. Yesterday was just a friday in my country, nothing more.

You can be as patriotic as you want elsewhere where it is not off-topic, I won't utter a PEEP of "negativity" then. Just don't see why it should be your prerogative as an American to make off-topic posts in a forum meant for entirely different things. I could have posted here on the sixth of june to point out it was my nation's day of celebration, if I'd thought anyone else would give a shit about it, but I didn't. What would be the point, it's OFF TOPIC!

Time you realize that too methinks, instead of giving me snippy remarks!

what nation is that grall. I'm wondering since i have never heard of it .

Btw every forum has a bit of off topic in it. Otherwise there are tons of threads i would have had to close because they had nothing to do with consoles except some jump by the poster which might link it to a console.

jvd

Its bad enough that the thread is totally off topic in this forum and that it only applies to people from one country. But you make it even worse with that last comment. It may have been a joke, but it just comes accross as arrogance.

What if I posted this thread in the console forum on the 5th of November saying:

Happy Bonfire Night

To all us English people, happy bonfire night and to all those who aren't ... well you better start folding to make up for not being English ;)

I bet I'd get a hell lot of flack for it.

BTW "you better start folding".. what does that mean? I mean I get the jist of it, but what exactly does it mean?

Post has been edited to make people happy. Thread is locked. I wont post off topic any more on this forum. If any more off topic threads apear i will be sure to lock them asap no matter what is going on in them . So if in the future a point is made directly to a poster and that poster is unable to respond it must be dealt with in pms.
