Advisory: XBOX Dashboard local vulnerability
Release Date: 2003/07/04
Last Modified: 2003/07/04
Author: Stefan Esser [se@nopiracy.de]
Application: Microsoft XBOX Dashboard (up to today)
Severity: A vulnerability within the XBOX Dashboard allows to
totally compromise the security features of the XBOX.
Risk: Critical
Vendor Status: Vendor is not willing to talk about XBOX vulnerabilities.
Overview:
The XBOX Dashboard is what appears when you turn the XBOX on without a
disc in the DVD drive. It will let you adjust system settings, manage
your save games, play and rip audio CDs and configure your XBOX Live
account. It is the heart of the XBOX and its most vulnerable point,
because it lacks several security restrictions which are enforced on
games. This includes the lack of the reboot-on-eject-button "feature",
which is obligatory for all games.
The existance of an exploitable vulnerability within the dashboard could
totally compromises the XBOX security system. It will make the box
independent from Microsoft signed code and therefore this information is
released to the public now on the 4th of July 2003, the day of the XBOX
Independence.

This thread needs to be moved to general discussion.

Jealous, no. Slightly annoyed, yes ... to make it easier for you to understand, what would you think would happen, if I would start a thread for a important bank holiday of my none-american country? It would be off-topic and most people wouldn't care less ...jvd said:I don't get why everyone that is jealous of peoples patriotism much post thier negitive view when its not needed.

What makes you think I'm "jealous" of your patriotism somehow? Personally, if you ask me, patriotism is an outdated concept that most likely is only lagging religion when it comes to popularity in being used as an excuse to start wars. I'd just as well do away with it entirely, thankyouverymuch.
I don't think it is too much to ask to wonder in your off-topic patriotic celebratory thread in the CONSOLE FORUM (which you have been set to keep free from this kind of garbage), what makes you think the fourth of july has ANY interest or significance whatsoever to people outside the United States.
If there's one thing in particular that annoys me about Americans, it's the self-centered belief some of them has that anything even remotely connected to the US must be interesting to everyone else on this planet and needs to be celebrated, revered, etc simply because it happens to be American. Well sorry to burst your bubble pal. Yesterday was just a friday in my country, nothing more.
You can be as patriotic as you want elsewhere where it is not off-topic, I won't utter a PEEP of "negativity" then. Just don't see why it should be your prerogative as an American to make off-topic posts in a forum meant for entirely different things. I could have posted here on the sixth of june to point out it was my nation's day of celebration, if I'd thought anyone else would give a shit about it, but I didn't. What would be the point, it's OFF TOPIC!
Time you realize that too methinks, instead of giving me snippy remarks!
