Last Saturday saw the release of the Gizmondo in the UK. The flagship store managed to sell 800 units, but in Pro-G's opinion this isn't what we would call "stellar". When you consider the 87,000 units the Nintendo DS sold in its first weekend, 800 units seems a little...well, pathetic.

This didn't stop Gizmondo throwing a lavish party at Piccadilly's Park Lane Hotel. The event was hosted by movie star Tom Green and Danni Minogue. Attendees were treated to performances by Sting, Jamiroquai, Pharrell Williams and Busta Rhymes. Such a star-studded line-up must have put a fairly large dent in the Gizmondo bank balance, and it is hard to understand the reasoning behind it. Surely that money could have been spent a little more wisely, perhaps on getting a few more games available at launch.

While not to put a downer on the Gizmondo's opening day sales, here at Pro-G we can't see a strong future for the device. However, we could be proven wrong. We'll keep you updated on how well the Gizmondo performs over the next few weeks. If you are looking for more information on the unit you could do worse than check out our hands-on look at the unit.

anonymous marketing guy, located not far from london: hey, i have a brilliant idea!
another anonymous merketing guy, next door from the first: what's that, bob?
formerly anonymous marketing guy now known as bob: let's get a pocketpc, put it in a "phat" case and sell it to the "hip-hop" game consumer market!
second marketing guy: wow, bob, how come you always get the bright ides in this *bleep* company! damn, just imagine, we take a 400-squid device, stuck it in another case and sell it hot-caked for 300 squids to those sucker-for-our-lovin kids!
outright bob: yep. all we need to do is invite some "hip-hop" stars at the release party *frantically looks up the definition of 'hip-hop' in the webster, fails in that, eventually just scribes down some pop stars names* and we're in business. there!

The painful irony is that the damn thing won't even function as a PPC!

Aaaand!! The name just sounds painful... I've been pronouncing this Giz-mondo... like the word "Gizmo" + the word "Mondo" (nomenclature)... some other poor shmoe is probably calling it Jiz-mondo and to him it sounds like a friggin disease.

Again with the Giga-bytes vs Jigga-bytes...

Later

It was also sold at John Lewis and Toy 'r' Us stores, and online I think. We'll have to wait a while to get real figures. Though I still expect it to flunk.

From the second I saw this thing, it had FLOP written all over it. Why didn't any of the investors see that?

you know, they first wanted to name it the Flopstation (refering to G's of flops it can calculate) but they changed their plans a while ago to jizmondo. to attract the younger crowd

LMAO, its beautiful, sistine chapel beautiful

Technically, it is very good, to say the least. It has built in GPS and camera. It has good 3D performance and MS is supporting it with a couple of titles that are Xbox exclusives- a Halo game is also rumored. Why would MS support it with anything, I don’t know.
But its expensive, ugly, and has the dumbest name in history. It costs 2 PSPs!...of the value packs! It is around $500 the last time I read about it.

Since were talking about “otherâ€￾ handheld, Zodiac is also good. It even has touch and released before DS, so DS isn’t the first gaming handheld to have touch. But hey, who knows about Zodiac? Itsprice is cheaper than Gizmondo, but is it cheaper than PSP? I do not know.

Some links to pics of the device? The gizmondo. And how it compares to PSP specs wise?

Anyway the Tapwave had touch screen before the DS, but thats not the case. Is how you support the touch screen in games. After all the Tiger hanheld had a primitive touch screen.

Even though, im not a DS adept, i have to commend NIntendo for the creative uses it has come up for the touch screen.

Thanks.

The thing that gets me about Gizmondo is that they could very easily have made it a phone, which might actually have saved it and made it a nice niche product, but they stopped short. It's like begging to fail.
