If you're swearing that you get rotten wifi bandwidth from one floor to the next of your own house, and can't connect at all to your neighbor, you probably have a crappy antenna for your wifi adaptor.
I just read at the [H] of a team breaking the unamplified wifi distance record with full bandwidth! Pretty amazing, considering this wasn't NASA or anything, just a bunch of guys building some stuff themselves and using surplus equipment...
