GeForce FX 6800Ultra -previews thread

From Firingsquad preview:
GeForce FX 6800 is also NVIDIA’s first native PCI Express graphics solution. Follow-up GeForce 6 series parts will also support PCI Express natively. NVIDIA has also integrated a video processor on the graphics core, circumventing the need for an external chip.

If it's true, that means the whole HSI debate is moot? Is nVidia going to come out with a PCI-Express to AGP bridge chip like ATi instead?

And the conclusion is

It ROCKS!!!!

between 50% to 100% better than Radeon 9800XT!!!

Well it looks as Nvidia delivered as promised this time around...

The HSI is for the current gen, NV3x, since the nv4x mid-end and entry level line-up will not be out probably a few month. Danm, the presentation didn't give much detail about the card(clock speed, core, estimated price, availability, etc) and also didn't mention their coming nv4x line-ups at all.

OMG NICE!! pitty they are using non approved drivers which prolly 4X the performance.

Though I'm still waiting for the 7x speed gain in HL2 that inq promised.

I didn't know that Ati is having a Shader Day event tonight. Hopefully we get some more juicy stuff from there too.

they do? I guess that's why dave is in toronto.

I'm very, very impressed with this GF6800U, it's way better then I had hoped, assumming all this is real and without cheats, this chip is a beast which NV (and me offcourse) needs.

I want one!!!

Thankfully, the fan doesn't seem to be as loud as the FX, and more bearable (although not as soft as ATI).

According to FS, the ultra runs fairly cool, but it does take 2 slots and is ~500$ (argh) end of may.

From FiringSquad's preview:
ATI has yet to step up to the plate with R420. Given their rather remarkable silence over the past few months, a silence not unlike the one preceding the Radeon 9700 line, it may be that they can surprise us. Perhaps they're holding off on final specifications until they see these GeForce 6800 Ultra numbers and know what they have to beat, or perhaps they're not sure if R420 can deliver. We'll soon find out, maybe even as early as today, which marks ATI's second Shader Day event.

On that rig the Aquamrk3 score for a 9800XT should be about 50K not 20K - I say from alot of experience they didn't install the AGP Northbridge chipset driver correctly before they installed directx 9.0b

They need to

1. Re-install the AGP chipset driver
2. Re-install Directx 9.0b
3. Re-instal Catalyst 4.4

Ands watch scores go up to around 50K vs 68 for the NV40

Notice, however, that the 14k 3Dmark figure for nv40 is actually only in 800x600. I don't know why they even bothered to bench in that resolution.

But that is the standard 2003 3D mark bench resolution R9800XT scores about 7000+ on a normal PC there... and just over 10000 in the best overclocked record breaking systems...

I feel it's time for the Firingsquad reviewers to be issued with new glasses....

You can clearly see the difference NVIDIA’s new rotated-grid implementation makes in 3DMark 03, just focus on the leading edge of the wing of the B-17 bomber at the bottom of the scene. Deciding between GeForce 6800 Ultra and RADEON 9800 XT is a tough call however

I can see the difference between the wing edges quite clearly, true the 6800u is better than the 5950 but the 9800XT is still way ahead.
I believe the final result though is that NV will get let off this performance tweak.
