An FIA spokesperson said: "He has a strong record on promoting women and equality in sport, which he is happy to be judged on. It was a central part of his manifesto and actions taken this year and the many years he served as vice-president for sport prove this."

The existence of Ben Sulayem's old website, and the fact it contained misogynistic views, had been discussed by senior figures within F1 since the 61-year-old Emirati became FIA president in December 2021.

But the website's contents had not become public until they were revealed by The Times on Friday.

The newspaper reported that on the site Ben Sulayem says his likes and dislikes are "basically simple", adding: "I love the desert and I love meeting real people."

The website goes on to say that he does not like talking "about money, nor do I like women who think they are smarter than men, for they are not in truth".
 
yes they want mbs to stop being so hands on. they want a new todt who was only really visible in the road safety side of fia which isnt really the fia's remit i would think
 
Not F1 but racing: 2023 Bathurst 12hr is on YouTube right now on GTWorld’s channel, 7h44m left. Mount Panorama is a super fun track to race on, and this presentation (announcers and lack of ad breaks) is so much more watchable than the Daytona 24hrs that was on NBC in the US recently.
 
The Red Bull and Williams 2023 car launches were just livery reveals, as they both used last year’s cars. Alfa‘s launch showed big changes for 2023. The Race’s video (10min?) is pretty comprehensive, though you’ll be pausing and rewinding to fully grok the details they speed through. The car looks great in red and black.

Funny that Audi owns the Sauber team badged as an Alfa running a Ferrari engine. Alfa’s no longer the sponsor next year, and I believe Audi doesn’t fully come in until 2026. I I wonder if they’ll run as a Lambo for two years. o_O

I watched parts of it live too and then watched extended highlights. This is a fun track to drive on and produces excellent racing too.

He thought it was important enough to self-publish. It was dumb then and it remains dumb now. He was 41 when he put that out to the world, not 21. It’s not dumb enough to get fired over, but it’s dumb enough to warrant a public apology or statement of growth.

Merc’s official launch was tolerable enough that I watched all 30’. Note the announcers fawning over Lewis’ and George’s introductory answers and sort of curtly moving on from Mick’s, and Toto picking up on that and saying a bit more about Mick. Interesting moment. Valid reason for the car to be all black (lost the paint to save weight, like their original “silver”).

Which an Aston driver will miss because of a cycling accident. No, not Alonso (again). Cue super-sub Niko! Wait, I’m being told he’s locked in a fulltime seat with Haas. Supposedly that leaves Vandoorne or Drugovich, unless it’s a minor accident that won’t mean missing the first race in which case the 41 year old Alonso might ask for the whole test to himself. How can such a minor story have so many interesting details?

It's Drugovich for the first tests, no info further than that yet.

 
Speaking at an official Honda news conference on Monday, Watanabe said: "Formula 1 is greatly shifting towards electrification. Given that, carbon neutrality is our corporate-wide target at Honda so we think F1's future direction is in line with our target. That is why we have decided to register as a manufacturer of a power-unit.

McLaren are among the teams said to have contacted Honda about a supply in 2026, but the Japanese company would likely be of interest to many teams given that they have won the world title for the last two years with Red Bull.

Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, Alpine and Audi are all committed to their own engine projects, but the Aston Martin, Haas, McLaren and Williams teams are all yet to sign up to power-unit partners from 2026.
 
Tech Heads F1 is a podcast with an aerodynamicist (or two?) that just started putting out YouTube vids explaining aero features on the new cars. Three vids for now, about 10mins each (up the playback speed, the guy pauses a lot).

The Race also had an hourlong podcast with Gary Anderson (former F1 aero guy with Jordan) describing what he did and looked for in testing.

The BBC has a short article on the first day of testing. I expect a few cars to introduce new parts by the third day, so I’m not sure how much to read into times other than RB is probably still the car to beat. It seems they’re using the mysterious lightweight floor they developed late last year but didn’t need to put on.

Edit: F1TV Tech Time has Sam Collins walking the pit lane and pointing out interesting changes in each car on day one. Will Buxton said in their Highlights show that Stroll broke one or two wrists in his bike fall but expects to start the first race. :unsure:

From BBC’: ”Alpine feel like they’ve got a car that’s capable of Q3, but that Aston Martin have leapfrogged then comfortably.”

Edit 2: F1 Live: 2023 post-test reaction had the usual comments on how each car looked and a really cool transition bw the 2022 and 2023 Merc at 34:10.

Consensus roughly seems to be RB will walk it, Ferrari confident, Merc may have taken a step but may be challenged by Aston who ppl think have leapt the midfield, Alpine confident but ppl didn’t get a read on their (very stiff) car (tho they didn’t test the soft tires, only the mediums and harder that’ll be used in next week’s race), McL had a lot of issues and downplayed their car but may still be in the fight with Alpine, Haas (second stiffest) and Alfa okay, Alpha iffy, Williams may start fighting the midfield despite personnel changes (new principal, no aero head replacement yet).

Also startling to hear that only three driver lineups remain unchanged: RB, Ferrari, Merc. Lot of rookies and driver changes.

Ferrari have moved their longtime trackside strategy head Iñaki Ruida [sic?] back to their homebase strategy center and put a new, young guy on the pitwall (rumored by Italian media to be a move Binotto would have made; he debriefed Vasseur). They’ve also simplified the pitwall by dropping down to six ppl rather than eight. Haas will have a half pitwall of only three ppl trackside.

Edit 3: Ted talks to Merc tech dir. Mike Elliot for 15mins, then goes over the other cars for another 15. I love how Ted spends minutes talking about paint and tire temp sensors but when Mike says most of the aero is generated under the car Ted glosses right over it…. Still, a good segment that shows pretty well which sidepod style each team has chosen and various other similarities (like gulleys/gutters up top that guide the halo wake to the back of the car).

i have to talk myself down by telling myself that no dont be silly, red bull are much too quick and that they are sandbagging and there is no way to beat them
