Finally a good WW2 tactical shooter for Xbox?

Brothers in Arms: Road to hill 30

Even though the maximum players online will be 4, each human commands 3 other computer AI soldiers. This focus is on tactics not running around the map as fast as possible killing anything that moves.
To me only having one other partner will allow for much more strategic gameplay. It should be easier to coordinate tactics, unlike Halo 2.

No respawn like Counter Strike and Rainbow 6 combined with realistic weapon damage adds more tension to the gameplay in my opinion. Those that perfer respawn aren't toally out of luck in the sense that if you die, you just take over one of the other AI soldiers in your squad. So if someone gets an early lucky shot on you, at least your knocked out of the round right away and can still make a comeback.

IGN has posted their latest impressions of the game.

This game looks like a great one , I just hope that they put a lot of missions on it.

BTW splint screen is only for 2 right?

Gamespot has another postive preview up. They mention the game has split screen but not co-op.

One thing that you don't really notice until you're in the game is that there are no aiming reticles or target cursors. This is a nice touch, because it no longer allows the hyperfast, run-and-gun-style shooting that's prevalent in most shooters. Shooting in this game feels incredibly realistic, because it's difficult to hit anything farther than 10 feet away by shooting from the hip. Instead, you need to tap on the right thumbstick to zoom in on the iron sights for each weapon, which makes it easier to aim. Even then, there's no guarantee of getting a hit due to the recoil of the weapon and the other variables that go into actually putting lead into a target. That just makes it all the more satisfying to see one of your shots fell an enemy.

...

Brothers in Arms is a beautiful-looking game on the Xbox, and there's a wealth of detail packed into the character models, environments, and weapons. While you won't see this in the multiplayer game, during the single-player campaign, you'll see your clean-shaven paratroops jump into France. And over the course of the campaign, you'll see more and more facial hair and dirt on their faces. While the Xbox version of the game still needs a little more graphical tweaking (the textures on buildings in the background seem to be missing), there's still a lot to be impressed with in the game. One particularly memorable sight is the way little pieces of dirt "stick" to the screen as if your character is wearing glasses when an explosion goes off nearby. The game is also packed with a soft light bloom, though it accentuates the graphics nicely rather than overpowering them, as it often does in other games.

All in all, Brothers in Arms looks very sharp...

Thanks for the update, it is pety I love splint screen, this also looks much "more tatical" than R6s games, wich are a disilusion, IMO.

BTW look for Close Combat you may like ( probably will be "less tatical" but try a look)

I play Rainbow 6: 3 fairly often on Xbox LIVE, and it's one of my favorite games. While the time period is obviously different in Brother in Arms, it is much more focused on realism when it comes to firing weapons. Iron Sights are a big plus.

I really like the WW2 setting for first person shooters. Day of Defeat is an old favorite of mine. Designers seem to have an easier time designing convincing war torn levels imho.

What do you want out of split screen? 4 players at once?

3 is enough once that I do not have more controlers. ;)
R6: I was speaking about SP
I really like splint screen co-op and deathmatch your interaction, tatics, and provocations ;) are way better. And if you lose you can always beat in your friends

Brother in Arms has the best Iron Sights I've ever seen in a game. For years hard core mods for the PC have had this feature like the Unreal Tournament mod Infiltration. It's great that this type of game style is coming to consoles more and more. Metal Gear Solid 2 has Iron Sights, which I think was the first console game to do this.

Anyway what makes BIA special is that it is totally forsaking weapon crosshairs. You either fire from the hip with no crosshair or you raise the gun up and use the Iron Sights. I'm not aware of any published FPS every doing Iron Sights only.

Now all they need is depth-of-field to blur the rest of the scene (where you aren't aiming at in particular)

As long as it's not too much, yeah. If it's too strong, u end up only being able to see a small portion of the already limited view... not too nice...

True enough. I was thinking of something along the lines of Halo:CE's zoomed pistol mode, but with a just a tad larger view diameter (to compensate for the actual gun being in the way).

According to Gamespy, motion blur is in the game, but how it's used I don't know. On one of the Iron Sight pics, it does look like some blur is applied to make a certain portion of the gun out of focus.

On the Xbox, Brothers in Arms looks great, running smoothly and including all the latest graphical hooks, like ragdoll physics, motion blur and desaturation. For facial animations for the characters, Pitchford says Gearbox has research similar to the work Valve has done for Half-Life 2, with the hope being that you'll feel more of an attachment to the team you're fighting alongside. We didn't get to see the PC version in action, but Pitchford says that along with support for higher resolutions, it should also have pixel shader rendering and support for other DirectX 9 features.

Gearbox developed Halo:CE I think, so maybe they'll have something similar.

Custom Edition? Yeah. It was them. Seems like they learned some nice tricks with that fast shaders (something about less overhead in DX or something).

I think it was something that was introduced in DX9 that couldn't be done in DX8.(some code in dx8 had to be done on the cpu, and was able to be moved to the video card with dx9 shaders)

oooh... that would make sense given that the "fast shaders" only seemed to give improvements to dx9 cards.

HomeLAN - There has been lots of talk about Gearbox’s “Fast Shadersâ€￾ for HaloCE. Can you be more specific as to the improvements made for framerates with Fast Shaders?

Marc Tardif - Halo PC’s renderer uses part of the DirectX Api to manage the shaders and shader states. After experimenting with some proprietary technology, we decided to abandon D3DXEffects and write our own shader management system. The resulting rendering performance increase can be anywhere from 30%-60% depending on system configuration.

All the Xbox previews are saying the graphics in BIA are top notch. Considering they ported Halo to the PC, Gearbox should have intimate knowledge on how to get the most out of NV2A.

Brothers in Arms will feature an impressive graphics engine. Gearbox doesn't want to talk about technical details yet, but so far it looks beautiful. In the Xbox version that we saw, the Normandy countryside seemed to come to life. Gearbox used old photos and aerial maps to capture every detail, including the red and white window frame on one house. The game uses impressive high-dynamic range lighting and soft shadowing, like the soft glow of daylight to the dark shadows of the hedgerows. The engine can also render huge levels, an important factor, so you have room to maneuver fire teams on the battlefield. And in the level Pitchford demonstrated to us, there were no loading times at all, even as his squad battled its way along the road into the outskirts of Carentan.

Soldiers will have a wide range of facial expressions. You can even see their eyes track you as you move around, and you can see when they bite their lips anxiously. Your soldiers will also have distinct personalities; they are all based on real-life individuals. (Gearbox is changing the names of the characters because it is taking some fictional liberties with the personalities.) Publisher Ubisoft is currently negotiating with recognizable Hollywood talent to provide the voices for the soldiers.
