4. Bioharzard 4 - GC - 29,000 (174k): isn 't that low? how long is this game out ?

damn those dragonquest selling number s

That's quite a low figure. Capcom should have released this on PS2 first. As good as it is, the game is a temporary exclusive to a system that has a small userbase.
And it also seems that the public has grown out of RE games, if the latest instalments are anything to go by.
Shame cause RE4 is one hell of a good game.
GT4 very close to 1M copies, who was it that said it would not reach 1M anytime soon in Japan?

IMHO they stabbed themselves when they stabbed their fanbase on the PlayStation into moving the main series onto a Nintendo platform. IMO, most of those fans that didn't get a GameCube probably lost interest by now.

I'm one of those. Admittedly, part 3 and CV made me loose interest, but I was quite excited about part 4 on a PS2 (which of course then switched platform). Right now, I don't have a Cube and don't intend to buy one simply for RE4 (of course there are reasons, but I still have other games to attend to) - so by the time it does come out for PS2 and depending on the port quality... I might not even bother...

Resident Evil 4 was released on the 27th of January in Japan. One thing to note is that Capcom only made 180,000 copies available at launch.

Phil, Capcom have shot themselves in the foot many times with Resident Evil 4. A couple of examples are letting the release slip to just under a month after Christmas and announcing a PS2 port just before the GC release. No wonder so many of the people behind the game have left Capcom. They produced an amazing game and Capcom crapped all over it with bad decision after bad decision.

it didn't launch in Japan first? And one thing I never really got, is why did they name it Resident Evil everywhere else.. Bio Hazard is by far the cooler name (and better suited for all parts except the first one)

Not to sound doomy, but 2 games like
2. Radiata Stories - PS2 - 43,000 (233k)
3. Another Century's Episode - PS2 - 37,000 (212k)
sold more than the arguably biggest game on GC today.

And how could RE4 have been released on the 27th Jan if the figure goes like this: Bioharzard 4 - GC - 29,000 (174k)
That means that the game has so far sold 174k copies, of which 29k this week. That leads me to assume it was released long before Jan 27th.

every resident evil except zero, remake and 4 (for now) have been multiplatform, save the crappy lightgun games and side stories. i'm not really sure they really hurt the series by confing it to the gc, i think it was pretty dead before. like you said, after 3 and code V they lost a signifigant portion of the fanbase, and other, more "modern" survival horror games were poping up all over the place. going exclusive alowed them to put more passion into the series like it needed.

when re4 gets an official announcement (with release date) for ps2 i'd expect them to announce zero and the remake as well.

Kawa no Nushi Tsuri: Wonderful Journey (PS2, Marvelous) - 5,900 units
Project Altered Beast (PS2, Sega) - 4,200 units
OutRun 2 (XB, Sega) - 3,700 units

117k for the first day, and then they had a few more days sales (all higher than usual, as any game launch tends to be) before they started tracking the Jan 31-Feb 5 time period. (So that means ~28k in the other three days, which is easy to do.)

Considering the first-day sales of the likes of Halo 2, you'd think you'd be used to the crush of interest on launch day by now. ;)

As I said the game was released with only 180,000 copies available. I'm not sure if Capcom have made more stock available yet, but if they haven't then that explains what you're seeing.

BTW both the games you mentioned had close to 300,000 copies each available to buy at launch. So technically RE4 couldn't outsell them :), at least initially. Who knows what current stock is like. Perhaps RE4 is just not selling that great in Japan.. you can never predict those crazy Japanese :)

Resident Evil Remake sold 267,470 copies in Japan.
Resident Evil Zero sold 388,644 copies in Japan.

Based on these numbers, one could argue that RE4 could surpass these titles and sell 400K or even 500K.

Thats sad, Capcom should have anounced Ps2 version some time after GC release :?

Hope it has some legs and does well in USA/EU, the game deserves at least decent sales.

The annoucement is only bad for looking at #s now. But making a PS2 port will do WONDERS for their overall sales.

They still could have ported the game to PS2 without having to make that announcement before the release of the GC version though.

Average customers don´t read videogame sites. Therefore, I doubt they´re aware of the game coming to PS2. Capcom did shoot itself in the foot, but by making this game a GCN exclusive.

Their are plenty of ways to keep up with games news. Wether its reading a games magazine, watching a TV show, reading a games site or at the very least talking to someone who does. The average gamer will generally keep more or less up to date with whats gone on. Especially with games they may be interested in.

Whatever though, the fact is that the announcement could only possibly hurt sales of the games, it certainly couldn't help them.

Yes, hurt GCN sales now. Though I don't know why people who own both consoles would wait for the PS2 version unless they think it's better some how (controls, looks, whatever).

In the mid to long term it won't matter at all. Capcom will still end up selling a ton of RE4s on the PS2. The only people hurt are the ones looking for huge GCN sales so they can feel good about themselves.

Ty

Who really knows for sure how well the game will sell on PS2 though? Its release will probably end up being in early 2006, over 6 months after PS3 is announced and with RE4 already a year old.

AFAICS all this announcement could achieve is to hurt first year sales of the game. Which cannot be a good thing.

Is it really going to take that long to come out on the PS2? A year is certainly a long time for a port to make it out.

I agree somewhat; the announcement is not good for current sales. I still think porting the game to PS2 IS good for overall sales though. Your argument now is that people who own both consoles (after hearing of this annoucement) will wait for the PS2 version but by the time it actually makes it out, won't buy it (for whatever reason). I can see this hurting sales somewhat but PS1 games still sold through very well even after the PS2 launched so I expect PS2 games to sell through in good numbers for a time because of the large established user base.
