Enabling progressive scan for DVD movies on PS2 (SPCH-50001)

My buddy posted this over at AVSForum and didn't get much of a response, so I said I'd ask the bright folks at B3D!

Enabling Progressive Scan for Movies on a Playstation 2

Hey, I have a Samsung 50" DLP and one of the new Prog scan capable PS2s (SCPH-50001, I believe) and a Pelican System Selector Pro (just to throw that in there)

I can enable prog scan for games by simply hitting the x and triangle buttons with no problems. For some reason I can not find an option anywhere to enable progressive scan. I found an option in the DVD playback menu to switch it (Progressive On/Off) but it's greyed out.

Also, even though I have 16:9 turned on from the dashboard, widescreen movies are still showing up in 4:3 letterbox and I can not switch those to 16:9 from the DVD play menu either.

I've read through the manual and some forums, and they all say "Oh just switch on Progressive scan through the dashboard (like you do with 4:3/Full/16:9), but I cant' seem to find that option anywhere.

Am I missing something?

i know it's not an answer per se but
why not buy a dedicated pr scan enabled DVDplayer ?
why watch DVD's trough a ps2 when you can attach a nice philips 89€ dvdplayer on that expensive 42" screen

You're right, that's not an answer.

To enable prog-scan, he first needs to stop playing the movie. So, play the DVD, stop it (*stop*, not pause) then go into DVD options menu (press 'Select' button on the controller) and enable 16:9 and prog-scan there. 16:9 also has to be enabled in the PS2 settings (boot the console without the disc in the drive and go to settings screen)
