EA has no titles in development for Wii U

Less than two years after vowing to deliver on an "unprecedented partnership" with Nintendo, gaming giant EA is quiet on the Wii U front.

"We have no games in development for the Wii U currently," company spokesperson Jeff Brown told Kotaku yesterday. He did not rule out the chances of EA developing for the Wii U again. EA publishes many of gaming's biggest franchises, including Madden, The Sims, and Battlefield.

For perspective, according to Wikipedia, EA had 23 titles for N64, 87 for GC, 78 for Wii, and 5 for Wii U.

Discuss.

Sounds unprecedented to me... Just not in the way you would expect.

EA's reluctant to develop for the machine because they see sales at a crawl and that means little room for growth in terms of software sales. If Nintendo decided to throw some money EA's way to secure a few titles then I'm sure EA would be singing a different toon. At least they actually published a few games for Wii U unlike they did for Dreamcast. And if sales do pick up and Ninty gets to a decent installed base and certain genres of games end up doing well on the machine then they'll probably end up supporting it if it means extra game sales. But that has yet to happen and with the next gen of consoles on the horizon it is smart of EA to invest where they see future game sales.

Also in the talks of an unprecedented relationship with Nintendo they probably though Nintendo was going to be serious about their new system. Given the perception many of us here have on this board that Nintendo's lost its ability to compete or even cares about the actual market it is not hard to see why EA is dropping support.

They're not going to be getting GTA5 either, and that's going to be huge.

But at least they're still getting CoD and Assassin's Creed, if it loses those two then it's really in dire straits

really ? they did this in 1999 but with the dream cast.

I think the wii u is going to be a dead system in another year. Its a shame but maybe Nintendo in the home console market is just coming to the end

See if you can spot the pattern:

1) Activision sold 0.72 million units of Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified on the Vita and 0.18 million units of Call of Duty: Black Ops II on the Wii U.
2) Ubisoft sold 0.76 million units of Assassin's Creed III: Liberation on the Vita and 0.14 units of Assassin's Creed III on the Wii U.
3) EA sold 0.24 million units of Madden NFL 13 on the Vita but 0.03 million units on the Wii U.
4) EA sold 0.21 million units of FIFA Soccer 13 on the Vita but 0.07 million units on on the Wii U.

Some might say that because the Wii U was sold after the usual release date of these annual game franchises that they bought them on other systems. Perhaps that's true, but doesn't that prove the problem Nintendo is having? (people already have other systems to buy these games on, and probably have for a long time).

Nintendo has enough money that they can't realistically go bankrupt in the next decade or so, but is there are point where developers have lost so much faith in the platform, no one makes games for it? Will people actually pay $200 for a box that ONLY effectively plays Nintendo games?

Your also forgetting that the vita is older. It launched in Feb of 2012 while the wii u launched in nov/dec .

I'm not saying the wii u numbers are good but in terms of portable consoles the vita is the only place to get those types of games. The wii u has to compete against 2 other systems.

I honestly think we will see a $100 price drop on the wii u at e3 however.

That actually points out the problem though. If you already have a previous console where you can guy these games, why buy them on Wii U? Heck, why get a Wii U at all? In the past, the big driver used to be graphics, which is why even a port of an older game would still sell decently well. The Wii U didn't have that and the sales reflect it.

A lot of people predicted this once we knew a lot about the Wii U -- I guess you could call it a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Wii U puts Nintendo in a position whereby if they replace it early they won't be supported and if they don't do something to turn around sales people will care even less about a successor.

I suppose they are following the money-trail.

First they say that Frostbite 2 and now 3 cannot run on the Nintendo Wii U but then they announce Frostbite Go for mobile units, e.g. smartphones, handhelds and tablets probably.

Well they didn't say that the port was too difficult: they said it was cost inefficient.

Yeah, I think the quote was "not to promising" with testing out Frostbite 2 on the Wii U, whether it was driven by less than acceptable performance or the bottom-line.

Why would you buy them on the ps4 if you can get them on the ps3 ?

I think gamers will buy the system once Nintendo's stable of games come out. People want Mario /kart super smash , Zelda . As those titles release and price comes down the installed base will go up.

I think Nintendo messed up in terms of the power of the system. ITs to close to current gen systems (maybe in some ways slower) They might have been smarter going with an apu from amd like a trinity or something and they would have gotten better price / performance value.

Unless sony / ms want to go another 7 years . Nintendo could get its act together and release a new system in 2017. The wii u would be 4 years old and the new consoles would be 3. Even if Nintendo didn't want to give up the tablet in 2017 they should still be able to afford a system with better graphical capabilitys than the ps4/xbox and a much better tablet and maybe come in around the same price as the other consoles.

Irrelevantly to the likes of EA though.

Yes, I didn't expect a great support from them regarding the WiiU, but FIFA usually sells well on every platform, and a FIFA game for the WiiU wouldn't hurt.

I heard that they were unhappy with Nintendo because they wanted to help them to develop their online service in exchange of using Origin as the main platform of their online.

The real loss is those new games that EA had lined up, those that would push the boundaries of gameplay, put the tablet controller to new levels of interactivity and mind numbing interactivity that we have never seen before. We the gamers are so screwed that those new franchises will never see the light in the WII U..

EA you and your groundbreaking games will be missed..

No FIFA confirmed due to "disappointing" FIFA 13 sales.

OT : Please EA, make a Vita version. :(

to actually come out and make a statement why they arent doing it...

"Six months ago FIFA 13 was a launch title on Wii U," an EA spokesperson told Eurogamer. "Although the game featured FIFA's award-winning HD gameplay and innovative new ways to play, the commercial results were disappointing. We have decided not to develop FIFA 14 on Wii U."

yeah EA doesn't like Nintendo lol. Pretty sure the normal practice here is to just not talk about it.

Also pretty much "although our game was great, it's the Wii U's fault it didn't sell" messaging there.
