E-Machines Athlo64 notebooks still the best value out there?

I noticed E-Machines stopped selling their branded laptops, which I'd priced last year. I've taken a job in Japan and bringing my desktop would cost a fortune. So my question is, is there a better desktop replacment laptop for the money than the old E-Machines models?

This is the best rate I've found on one the systems:

Also, if there is anyone knowledgable on the subject, would I be better off waiting until I get to Japan? How are notebook prices there?

:edit for typo:

Not sure about prices in Japan, but I've been impressed with Averatec laptops recently. They tend to be really good prices for what you get.

I have that exact notebook. Outside poor battery life it rocks hardcore. I love the thing. I payed 1250 after rebate for mine and don't regret it. It kicks ass for gaming and love it for watching movies. Everyone I show it to someone they are shocked that an e-machine could be so good. I doubt you could find a better notebook for that kind of money. Athlon 64 +a mobile 9600 is a very very nice combo. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

I haven't had time to check that link, (Thanks for it btw), but can you throttle it back substantially to improve battery performance when all you want is internet/word processing type work?
