minor bugs?

interesting... at least it downloads 8 MB when installed on the top of DX9...

8 MB is far from "minor" when original DX9.0 Redist takes 31 MB IMO...

Minor bugs:
- BSOD when you boot win 3.1[Fixed]
- S3 virge would not run 3dmark2003 [Fixed]
- Issues with the FlowFX ( There were no vacuum cleaner option in the hardware detection service ) [Fixed]
- Parhelia had banding issues [not Fixed, but will be soon (2 years)]
- Radeon 9500 recognized as a 9700 ( hardware hack ) [Fixed]

:)

and actually...
In matter of fact, why should I care? :) and yes, I really mean this in positive way...

during last month, only game that I have been really playing is good old Settlers 3 (cleaned up one closet and found it.) and it doesn't even use any D3D interfaces. just good old bit people walking around on isometric world using DirectX 6 and/or 7 Direct Draw acceleration.

most likely I'll be playing it quite some time... at least it is great fun while waiting the fifth generation, which is based on Renderware engine. :)

"We have learned from a Microsoft representative, who works as a premier support member at Microsoft Germany, that DirectX 9.0a was removed because of an incompatibility with ATI Catalyst 03.1 drivers. Catalyst drivers 03.2 were unaffected, Wenzel said. He pointed out that there were still some minor bugs bud did not want to comment any further.

Catalyst 03.1 drivers are still pretty popular because they perform better and allow Counter-Strike fans to play the game. Catalyst 03.2 introduced a show stopper bug with Counter-Strike.

Update: Microsoft has re-enabled the download: here. The release date now is 3/26/2003. A quick comparison using DXDIAG did not reveal any changes. "

contacted Terry Makedon, ATI's software product manager to see if this was true. He has said the following:

The story on Warp2Search is not true. Microsoft has not contacted me about any incompatibility with DirectX 9.0a and CATALYST 3.1. I also find it interesting that the news story also claims that CATALYST 3.1 perform better than CATALYST 3.2 (another inaccuracy). It is a false story, do not believe it. I will be contacting the author of the story for more information.

I had the 3.1 cats installed when I installed dx9.0a and not a single 3d app would work after it would just hard lock. I installed 3.2's and it worked just fine so there is obviously something wrong there.

it was off a fresh install.... so no there was nothing wrong with my system.
dont really matter anymore though the only reason why I was going to use the 3.1's is cause the 3.2's have an issue with jurassic park genesis that causes it to crash if you zoom in sometimes :( but the 3.2's seem to be fine with all the other games I play:
freelancer
gothic
hegemonia
hitman2
madden2k3
highheat04
mvp baseball 2k3
rallysport2k3
ravenshield
splintercell
rayman3 (with some graphical errors with a lot of action on the screen)
hearts of Iron
Dirt Track Racing 2

I wrote out a list for those who might be thinking of uprading either to the cat 3.2's or to dx9.0a.

DirectX9.0a The saga continues...

From http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=9882&category=main

"Well the DX9 Beta News group has received some sort of explanation, because of the confusion over DX9.0a and the DX9 "March Preview" Beta

Hi all,
For those who haven't noticed there's a new end-user runtime (DirectX 9.0a) available via http://www.microsoft.com/directx

DirectX 9.0a is an updated version of DirectX 9.0 which includes bug fixes and improves performance in the graphics and networking components. There are no new or modified APIs in this release. Specifically, this update includes:

* Performance enhancement to the runtime texture management in Direct3D.
* General performance improvements to D3DX
* Fix for a potential PSGP memory overwrite in Direct3D.
* Support for anti-aliased render targets added
* Update for DirectPlay to address some network connectivity issues using some UPnP routers.

The DirectX Managed Code layer has been removed from this download to minimize the potential download size. This component will continue to be offered as part of the DirectX redistributable for developers to redistribute as required. The DirectX 9.0a redistributable will be available soon.

Expected download sizes are now less than 8Mb for the end-user runtime on Windows XP and less than 9Mb for Windows 98 and Me. The developer redistributable is now less than 33Mb. The full SDK download remains the same at approximately 228Mb. We'll mail on here as soon as the developer SDK with the updated runtime redist and symbols is available. To reiterate the version posted currently on the consumer DirectX website is solely for retail runtime bits. Do *not* use this to replace developer debug bits.

Thanks, and hope this clarifies,
Microsoft DX Team"
