Could Nintendo go third-party?

Do you think Nintendo could go third party with how the Wii U's doing? Would the console really hurt them that much?

This question is ridiculous. Nintendo is profitable and has sold 3 million consoles already in 3 months. Some people on this board think the vita is still alive and it hasn't sold 3 million in a year and half. N64 did crap for sales, far worse than Wii U is doing already, as did Gamecube. Yet, Nintendo still profited and came back with the Wii. Nintendo can last at least until 2020, even if they are doing as bad as the doom and gloomers/PS360 fanboys think they are, which they aren't.

Edit come to think of it, N64 through Gamecube was an entire decade of Nintendo having a poorly selling, poorly supported console, and they made millions, so I'd give them an entire decade of Wii U selling poorly before they get in trouble, so maybe by the end of 2022.

Nintendo will never go 3rd party. They'll be a very niche hardware manufacture that sells its own games but they'll never develop for another hardware.

You're confusing shipped with sold. Apparently, they've actually only sold about 2 million. But you're probably right they'll continue to keep going for a while as they are now although they're probably a better fit for a software vendor going forward unless they launch a phone.

That's 3 million shipped with slightly under 2 million sold.

It's funny you should mention the Vita. The software sales in the UK are absolutely horrible for Nintendo. In January the UK Sales charts show the Nintendo WiiU selling less software (~34K) than the PS Vita (~46K), and that's including the bundled NintendoLand title as sales. That's also not including the typical +25% or more purely digital software sales for the Vita. (Source Thread)

Anyways directly on topic, I would prefer to see Nintendo go third party. I quite enjoy their games like Mario but they're not worth the initial entry price to me ($400 for console and game).

I can see nintendo going to third party on consoles, they can't compete with microsoft/sony unless they come up with something ground breaking like motion controls or kinect that sets the world on fire, but i think those days are over, and nintendo has no chance, both kinect and wii have had there time.

Didn't Sony recently post their EIGHTH consecutive loss?

were talking about consoles only. ps4 is in great position nextgen to be the market leader, third party support, the brand is still strong and launching at a good price at the same time as xbox8. let's just put it this way, if wiiu fails, which is looking very possible, no third party will even take a look at nintendo's next console.

Maybe it'll get better when Yoshi, X, and SMTxFE come out.

Since I can't edit my post, what you're saying is:

No third party developer will be interested in Nintendo's next console if the Wii U fails, yet ONE of the reasons the Wii U is failing RIGHT NOW, is BECAUSE no third party developer is interested in it.

AC3, BLOPS2, BATMAN and epic micky 2 highly disagree with you, all of those sell millions, if your talking exclusive third party games they hardly exist anymore. i think the only chance the wii u can be saved is wii u sports and wii u fit, if those don't work, i would say the system is doomed, because it shows the people that bought the wii don''t care about those games anymore.

Sorry, I WAS talking third party exclusives.

Doesn't Nintendo have billions of dollars in their reserves?

You don't think it'll get any better when the games announced from the Direct come out.

Maybe an announcement for Retro's game at E3?

The only game series I would really like to see on modern consoles is Metroid Prime but it seems to me that Retro Studies isn't really working on anything new there.

This was largely, if not almost entirely because of the immensely successful gameboy and DS systems. I doubt N64 and GC made nintendo all that much money in comparison. ...And as we know, "new" mobile platforms are eating into sales of traditional handhelds at a huge rate. It's doubtful any dedicated handheld gaming systems will survive all the way to 2022.

Sometimes it is better to be the big fish in your own pond than it is to be a big fish in someone elses pond. If they went multiplatform there isn't any assurance their market will grow because they themselves created the catch 22 where because a significant number of people want to play their games when they buy their systems so 3rd parties are scared away which reinforces this position even further. They would also lose their hardware revenues and making $50M a box over even 30M consoles still represents about $1.5B in profit.
