Foster City, California - December 3rd, 2004 - Sony Computer Entertainment America announces the release of COLLADA v1.1.0, now available at the http://collada.org web site. COLLADA is an extensible, open interchange format. 3Dlabs, Alias, Discreet, Emdigo, Novodex, Secret Level, Softimage, and Sony Computer Entertainment are pleased to announce the second release of COLLADA to the interactive 3D industry. New features in the COLLADA 1.1.0 schema include character animation and skinning support requested by game developers and interactive content creators to enhance the existing geometry, lighting, shading language, and asset management capabilities of COLLADA.
Also of note it seems that 3DLabs has joined the partners,
3Dlabs is working to extend COLLADA to support the interchange of OpenGL Shading Language (GLSL) shader programs; in essence, to use COLLADA as the "effect metafile" format for GLSL assets.
To support this development effort, we leverage OpenSceneGraph (OSG) as a multi-platform, open-source, GLSL-capable rendering toolkit.
3Dlabs is developing a COLLADA importer plugin for OSG, which will be released as open-source under an OSI-certified license. That importer plugin will function as the framework on which to develop the "GLSL Profile" for COLLADA.
In the spirit of open-source, 3Dlabs invites and encourages developers to collaborate on the development of the OSG plugin. When the plugin reaches an appropriate level of functionality and maturity, we intend to offer it to the OSG team for inclusion in the core OSG distribution.
