According to the investment firm, Capcom shipped 320,000 copies of Dead Rising in its first week (the game launched August 8 in the US), and Capcom has forecasted shipments to reach 450,000 units by today. Based on the game's better-than-expected performance, NikkoCitiGroup upped its fiscal year (ending March 2007) shipment expectations for Dead Rising to 800,000 units from 660,000.

This initial success of Dead Rising outlines the increasingly important role of digitally downloaded demos. NikkoCitiGroup analyst Soichiro Fukuda wrote, "Robust Dead Rising sales suggest the establishment of a successful pattern for US marketing whereby trial version downloads stimulate interest and lead to stronger actual sales." Users downloaded around 300,000 Dead Rising demos over Xbox Live worldwide.
This is amazing. Please no theatrics but yes, PC's did it first however this was a much needed update to consoles.

I think Capcom may be giving too much credit to the demo for it sales and not enough credit to their development team. The game is selling cause its flipping fun not becuase of the demo, imo (see: Full Auto for the converse).

Demo's may up the exposure of your game, but I can't imagine many people who download demos don't follow gaming websites for information. And demo's can probably do more harm than good. If a game looks good on paper, but turns out to be a turkey, if you have the chance to try before you buy sales of some titles I'd expect to drop. Whereas good games will generally sell well.

Well, add me to the anecdote bucket. I only downloaded the demo "because it was there". I thought all the previews were somewhat stupid and thought the game would be extremely boring.

The demo convinced me otherwise and I bought it on release day; as well, a buddy of mine did the same thing. Tried the demo then bought the game.

What they should have announced was a sequel with co-op. Who cares about correlations (wrong or right)? :p

Do you think you would have bought it without a demo after you read the reviews and the positive feedback of purchasers on the forum though?

I even got a message from someone telling me to buy the game... ;)

I would have read the reviews and been like, "what?!?, I can't believe this game could possibly be good!" having the demo was a pure plus. I think the same for Lost Planet, without that demo, I might have bypassed Capcom altogether, well, with the exception being: SFII.

To be honest, I don't think most of the forum would have bought it without the demo, regardless of reviews.

The thing with a demo is that you can see how long it would take you to be good with the game. That can very easily tell you how much fun you'd have with the final game.

If demo downloads are any indication of sales, then look out for Saint's Row which had 320,000 demo's downloaded in the first week.

I think im one of the customers that actualy bought the game becuase of the demo. looked at the reviews and pictures of the game and wasnt to impressed, it seem to linear to me. then the demo came out and everybody thought it was fun. so i downloaded had a blast killing zombies with the light sword and CD's. tried to hold off till my video store had it for rent but gave in and bought it becuase my girlfriend is out of town plus she likes these types of games. and enjoy killing time.

If i hadnt demoed it frist, i think i wouldnt have bought it. I would have just rented it for 2 days on the weekend and beaten it thus killing my urge to buy it.

plus i had doubts about saints row and if i should buy it. but after i demoed it, its a buy.
