Batman: Arkham City [MultiPlatform]

Late to this party but I was keen to play the predecessor before grabbing Arkham Knight in June and having only ever played the Arkham Asylum demo on PS3 Lord-knows how many years ago.

Having played more recent/modern variants of this control scheme like Shadow of Mordor (exact same control layout down to detective/wraith mode) on L2, the controls in Arkham City definitely feel a bit janky in comparison. However the real off-putter, which is ironic because I wanted to get up to speed with the story before AK, was in terms of narrative this game is quite hostile if you've not played the previous game. It's constantly referring to past events which I assume took place in Arkham Asylum. Without any explanation the mini-combat tutorial has you playing a Catwoman and then you're playing a Bruce Wayne being throw into some kind of jail. No recap, just deal with it. The game just assumes you're played the previous game and knows what's going on. Not cool, Rocksteady.

This is very much putting me off buying Arkham Knight because there's no way I'm going to have time to play two previous games. Even if I had time I doubt I'd want ti play two very-similar games back to back.

You'll buy it for Harley anyway.
:p

Actually, I don't really recall much knowledge being needed between games.

Arklham Asylum Cliffnotes:

  • Gordon is doing steroids
  • Croc sewer fight
  • Scarecrow was awesome
  • joker laid an egg

Really, what's there that couldn't be inferred anyway? Bad guy(s) with funny name(s) do(es) something bad, real bad. Someone (probably) died. Batman being his usual sunny cheerful self. We're not talking A Brief History of Time here.

I've played AC first and I really didn't felt left out from the story or the control scheme or anything. And it was my first introduction to this combat mechanic.

Really, what's there that couldn't be inferred anyway?
  • Why has Bruce Wayne been thrown in prison?
  • Why is a large piece of Gotham now a prison zone and why are there no guards?
  • Who is Strange and how does he know that Bruce Wayne is Batman?
  • The entire first chapter of Arkham City is pursing Harley Quinn and Joker because of what just happened. But what the fuck just happens because I didn't play the previous game?
How the fuck do you infer story from nothing and no recap? :runaway:

None of those questions relate to Asylum really. :p
So you're not supposed to know what's going on? Ok, I can accept that if that's the case.

He hunts joker just cuz.
He starts out pursuing Harley and the psycho bitch keeps bleating about what happened to Joker, as does much of the dialogue that you listen too.

Again, if you're not supposed to know because it's not been revealed, I can accept that's the case.

Perhaps I've been overly harsh on the completely lack of exposition about what's going on.

The only thing that's maaaaaybe relevant is that he turned into a super-roided monster as the final boss in Asylum, but.. Joker's current prognosis is pretty much contained within the City storyline.

And maniacs freely roaming around Arkham City and the lack of police is also explained at some point? And who Strange is and how he knows your identify?

He's a smart cookie I guess? I just took that in stride.

The island is just a hell-hole for criminals.

The most interesting aspect is Batman having control over Harley with duct tape. :X

I'm not hugely into comics so I'm unsure whether this is a significant character or what, it's just kind of thrown in.

Yeah, I got that without using detective mode. Why? Or is it explained later? If so, no three-year-old spoilers! :nope:

I think you need a cold shower. You should probably take two :yep2:

Yeah, I think it's just thrown in. I don't really follow Bats. Supergirl tho...

Maybe... don't recall specifically.

:D

I also know very little about batman before playing AC. I only watched the old cartoon and the movies. Never read the comics.

The game assumes that we know some things from the comics. Before the game was even revealed I remember reading Dr. Strange's biography from the comics somewhere and it revealed that he knew Batman's identity hence he was one of his most dangerous enemies. But I cant recall how and I am bored to search

Dr Strange is Marvel - or at least he's among the characters in Lego Marvel Super Heroes and Stephen Strange (the same dude I think) is mentioned in Captain American Winter Soldier as somebody may be a threat to Hydra.

If they've crossed universes, no wonder I'm confused!
