albatron upping the clock from 400 to 600 (if you ask me thats a big change)

and the dreaded inq i know you all love
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=15377

the x800pro is clocking at 475/900 rather than 500/1000 suggested from [H]'s chart

Inq suggested 475 is already higher than expected due to better yield, I'm wondering where the 500 comes from.

Albatron did not say they are upping the clock. They said the core "has been clocked" that high. They also claim their 6800 Ultra only has a 500 Mhz DDR vs. the reviewed card's 550.

It just sounds like Albatron's PR is based on some old, pre-final clock rate numbers from nvidia.

The first time that "chart" from H (who got it from gzeasy) was posted a week ago it was said to be incorrect by those who know (but not saying which parts are specifically incorrect.)

The story from the inq today is really the first one that talks about clock speeds. I tend to put a little more stock in today's Inq story, since they probably got the information leaked out of ATI's press event a couple days ago.

yeah mybad on that, im just basing it off the revision boards clocked at 400. going up to 600 is a big change to me. but going down to 500 is kinda bad also.

900MHz seems godawful even for a 12 pipe card, especially compared to the previously speculated 1200-1600 MHz.

I hope $300 is the mark as it will be more affordable for me, that is unless 6800 non-ultra beats in which case ill get that. :devilish:

so 400 mhz for the core and 1gig for the memory are the final speeds for the nv40?

No, 400 Mhz core and 550/1100 for the memory. At least, that's the official word from nvidia.

just wondering, you have a press release of them saying the official is 400/1100 (550x2)??

i havent seen any information about the clock speeds from nvidia lately ;x
thanks

The boards we had previously seen at CeBit, and probably the ones that shipped to developers and been used at GDC, had core speeds of 475MHz, yet the final Ultra specification, we are assured, is 400MHz.

I'm pretty sure the reviewers were assured by nVidia, not some guy on the street. And if nV will be boosting clocks at the last minute, I don't think they'd tell people until around R420's NDA lifts.

well im not disagreeing with you, i beleive the reviewers should be assured with nvidia. its just it was a revision board and everything isnt final until they say it is really. and they havent.

i havent seen any press from nvidia stating those clocks, or that they are even final. (if they have, i missed it) and im sure manufactuers can change the clocks or memory if needed.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that nVidia will up the clock to at least 475 mhz. 600 is less likely than 500mhz, but both are plausable. I believe that nVidia will be able to pull it off, however the cost (to heat) is the issue. I believe they cannot afford to lose this round. Personally I'm hoping the nv40 comes out on top because of its insane featurset. I've fallen in love with it after seeing previews. However, that said, ATI may well come out and surprise me. I love the 9800pro I have :) I'm cautiously regaining faith in nVidia.

I believe that NVDA has also included a software utility that allows people to manually increase or decrease the core clock and memory frequency. As yields start to increase and as their process starts to be further refined, there may be more headroom for increasing the clocks. Guess we will have to wait and see what people can do.

You mean the one that's been in the drivers since the fx5800?
