ASUS ROG Ally, twice the power of the Steam Deck. 120Hz, 500 nits.

Seeing chatter about the latest BIOS update actually drops performance. Curious what the situation is, and if it's just a setting(s) being reset to non-optimal value(s).

But if this just works, somebody should try it out, mainly to see how much performance we loose with SteamOS by emulating Win32 and DX12. This can't be totally for free.

Looking at Steam Deck numbers with SteamOS vs Windows would likely be more telling. From what I remember the results could be rather mixed, as in some games actually did perform better.

In terms of SteamOS on the RoG Ally there's a few issues. The SteamOS version available to the Steam Deck isn't actually publicly available. SteamOS on the Steam Deck also has specific optimizations for the Steam Deck and provisions for more hardware access/control which would not be the case for the RoG Ally.

However, the proposal won't fix the seemingly bad impression from the ROG. Did not watch any YT reviews, but the headlines and faces i see above are quite telling.
So Asus should have made sure all necessary updates are already installed, and eventually add some custom SW to make UX better.
Surely no big problem for power users, but they target mainstream. And MS might give a helping hand too. They surely want Windows gamers, not Linux gamers.

ETA Prime installed steam os. Seems to work well.

Memory Bandwidth bottlenecks.
 
My guess also is that effective clocks might be higher on the Z1 vs Extreme, so the actual theoretical tflop gap (from clockspeeds) in typical usage might be lower than implied. You might even have the odd edge case as with the Farcry 6 result in which the Z1 is faster, somewhat akin to that PS5/XSX discussion in which the PS5's GPU is actually faster in some aspects due to the higher clocks despite much less compute throughput from being much less wide. Also what might be interesting is if the Z1 non extreme might effectively have more cache available to the GPU due to less contention from the 2 less CPU cores.

But with the above it's worth noting that looking at averages can be misleading in many cases. We do see some results in which the Extreme really pulls aside as it should on paper, especially with RDR2.
