This was just bought to my attention elsewhere. Absolutely disgusting.

It's not just that she's a girl in a jail full of men, but rather that she is, for all intents and purposes, a child. Being forced to have sex with these men for food? That's just wrong. What the hell was going through the guards minds when this was occuring? Honestly... You would think they'd do SOMETHING.

I don't understand how this could have happened, ten to one says there's an inside story here.

You would think the parents/lawyers would know where the girl was locked up, and alert federal officials.

Isn't it against Geneva conventions for males and females to be locked together in a prison, or for that matter against Brazilian law?

From our state department:

Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo states provided separate prison facilities for women; elsewhere, women were held with men in some facilities. Male officers, who served in women's prisons, often abused and extorted the prisoners for sexual favors. The administrative director for the Secretariat for Sao Paulo City Administration reported that approximately 5 percent of prison guards in women's prisons were men. In only two Rio de Janeiro State police districts were women held in gender-segregated, short-term jail facilities.

Apparently the Brazilian congress is planning on investigating this incident.

I wonder if something like this happening, and getting international attention, is enough to make them change the laws.

the worst part is that she came from a poor family and was arrested for stealing but never charged. for a month.

Probably not. She's probably from some favela and i doubt the people that can change something are to botherd about the people from these kinds of neighbourhoods.

the story i read implied it was the guards doing all the raping, not other inmates of the prison

epicstruggle's quote just before would seem to indicate such a thing, which is even worse because if that girl wanted someone to turn to and the guards were the ones doing these things, she'd be absolutely trapped.
