Grisoft announces the end of support for AVG version 6.0 effective on December 31, 2004 for technical reasons. This version has been available since 1999. Its structure does not allow for further improvements planned for version 7 nor improvements in detection techniques expected to come in the future.

End of support means we will no longer provide program updates or Virus Database updates for version 6.0 and therefore, within days, this version will not protect against new virus outbreaks!

those of you who want a freeware one need to look into antivir
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download955.html. Not sure if this means an end to the free edition that uses avg 6

which i discuss in my antivirus roundup, here

UPDATE: They are making a free version of version 7!

I'm using AVG 6 free edition right now. Personally, I only need a bit of virus protection. So my primary concern is resource consumption, which is exactly why I use AVG.

I might switch though, since they're dropping 6, after reading your report a while back, Anti-Vir is sounding pretty good.

I've been using AVGFree for 2 years now, without a single problem :). Main reason for using it, after trying several free others, was the small memory use.

I hope they keep it that way with the new version. Just downloaded the beta2 to check it out.
