Anyone here with a vertical mouse? How is the experience?

Out of laziness, I am trying to used to WASD as of late, 'cos I prefer not to use a controller if I can help it nor I don't want to edit the key bindings on all games.

I read this article the other day and it got me thinking if a vertical mouse would be nice to have. The author of the article commented that it changed his way of playing games and so on.

Do you have one of those or have you ever tried one?

I've tried one that belong to a colleague of mine for a bit, though not for gaming, and really enjoyed it. I'm thinking of getting one as my next mouse. It took a bit of learning before it worked well for me. But once I got accustomed to it I loved it. Kinda felt like holding a joystick in a way.

If you get one I'd love to hear your thoughts on the gaming part!

At work I have a vertical for my right hand and the most basic mouse for my left hand. It is a good idea to change hands if you use the mouse a lot.

I've been using this one for a year and a half now due to carpo and it's totally changed how my wrist feels, it doesn't hurt anymore!

It took a bit to get used to and it's nothing like a premium gaming mouse but this one with a few buttons and the top hat that lets me bind 5 things to it makes it more than adequate for general use as well as gaming. I prefer a mouse with lots of buttons and this was the only vert one I found that fit the bill. Still using it although I've added some traction tape to make it easier to lift and find the buttons on.

Well I never! That's the one I tried to get, although it's also called Zelotes C-18, as I mentioned in the thread about WASD controls. But they sent me the Zelotes T-20 instead, a vertical mouse with 6 buttons.

I didn't get used to it for now, but I gotta admit that it's due it isn't the mouse that I wanted, but I prefer to keep it until I decide to get the C-18 for real.

Like you, I also prefer a mouse with many buttons. I got the one below. Being programmable it allows me to program all the most used buttons on the keyboard. Q, E, R, F, G, Tab, Z, X, C, V, M, I, etc, so I can just use the keyboard mostly for moving and maybe jumping or running.

it feels a bit more natural to hold, at least to me. I'm still getting used to clicking the right mouse button, especially, sometimes my finger clicks on the side of the mouse rather than the secondary button.

Do you plan to use it for gaming or for "desktop" use? For gaming, the one that Digi mentioned looks nice, and it's a mouse I wanted to get a few weeks ago, but they sent me the wrong one -still ok to test or might give it to my GF just in case it's more comfortable for her.

by changing hands do you mean placing the regular mouse in the right hand and the vertical mouse in the left hand? Just curious....

I mean, with a regular mouse I can change hands quite easily, and although I am right handed I can manage a mouse with the left hand just fine. However, using a vertical mouse I don't even know how is that possible, the vertical mouse I got is meant for right-handed people.

It'll be for home, so mixed use hopefully. But the one Digi mentioned isn't too expensive to keep just for gaming. I already alternate between my Logitech MX Master 2S for office work and a Logitech G305 for gaming anyway. Switching out the G305 could be a good way forward.

I’ve been using vertical mice for work and gaming for about 2 years, initially out of necessity from carpal tunnel and ongoing to keep it at bay. I’m currently using a $30 high dpi mouse that’s easily better than the Logitech $80 version.

I actually have a left handed and right handed version of the Logitech as I had to go left handed at one point to help my dominant wrist. Between the vertical mice and some furniture based ergonomic changes, I’m able to work or game without problems in spite of the wheelchair.

Have you ever had trouble with your thumb hitting the two buttons when you try and lift it? That's where I put grip tape and it was a real improvement.

That's the only thing I dislike about my mouse. It can be challenging for me to lift without the grip tape, then again my hands have been sucking lately so your own mileage may vary. :)
