    Trilinear Filtering Comparison(R420 vs R360 vs NV40 vs NV38)

Can you double check the settings on the X800 because if those are correct, with the very visible mipmap levels, ATI are goign to get their ears bent on the webcast later today ?!

If it appears as an option it should say 'Enable High Quality Filtering' rather than 'Disable Filtering Optimisations' ;)

ATI Filtering Optimisation - Genius or Disingenuous

It has to be done :) [edit] Perhaps ignoring the fact that the PR appears to have messed up on this, from a gamers point of view, how do you feel ?

ATI are stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they include an option in the CP then we will see FPS falling all over the place as reviewers try and compare, rightly or wrongly, "apples to apples". If they stick to their guns and say 'you don't need to switch it off we guarantee...

Now the dust is beginning to settle, I think ATI have missed a massive marketing opportunity here. They should have came out on day 1 and say 'Hey we have this great new adaptive filtering that's better than anything you get now' followed by some graphs showing increased FPS and equivalent IQ...

    ATi is ch**t**g in Filtering

So it only just been exposed, and it's been exposed on ATI flagship product. There are some very persistant hardcore graphics groupies out there that are all now rushing around trying to spot sub-trilinear filtering in action :) Please don't get me wrong, I'm not actually a fan of the...

DB may argue that this isn't a "quality comprise", and it appears that there is no general demonstration that it is - YET.

    ATi is ch**t**g in Filtering

Well, mathematically unequivalent, but (so far?) imperceptible. ATI have moved the goalposts without telling anyone, which is why so many folks are narked. The sythetic IQ tools will give perfect tri-linear results but that's not what's being applied in-games. ATI should have made it clear...

I would assume that both companies now do extensive analysis of textures at the point they are loaded on to the card and could easily set filter flags just the once or when a device is restored (in DX terms).

Hmm. I suppose it would be easy to check. Just make the colour mipmaps more similar. Or instead of 'solid' colour levels, use different random levels of colour, e.g. instead of using solid red use random levels of red etc. That may fool any colour mip map detection code into not using trilinear...

Well lets wait a day or two, I'm sure ATI come come up with one ;)

    ATi is ch**t**g in Filtering

I may be way off base here, but by forcing trilinear when colour mipmaps are detected, then this would appear to give correct visuals when running those synthetic AA/AF/mipmap usage tools. Then under gaming conditions we go back to brilinear. Of course no-one would be interested in the FPS...

One of the problems with just storing x,y is that you only use about 78% of the available range of values. In effect x and y can only fall within a circle or radius 0.5. Also, you lose precision towards the extremes, i.e. the more forward facing normals get more of the range (you could over...

    r420 may beat nv40 in doom3 with anti-aliasing

Fresher as in newer, as in less time to produce optimised drivers for.
