Sony Home - The official thread*

I have to agree with london-boy. I only tried home for about an hour, and I absolutely hated it. In some ways it's actually kind of impressive how much Sony was able to make me abhor being there. I rank it right below the 2 hour timeshare presentation my wife and I subjected ourselves to so...

Sony Disable “Install Other OS” in firmware (v3.21)

I don't think your views and eastmen's views are incompatible. He's just saying that if Sony does a cost benefit analysis and concludes that continuing to support blue ray isn't beneficial for them they will axe it. You provide a lot of reasons why the result of that cost benefit analysis...

Yeah, I'm going to reserve judgment until he releases his work. We'll see. Nite_Hawk

He's shown before that he can change what is displayed on the screen in gameos. It's entirely possible he's just taking an old firmware and changing what version is being displayed. Nite_Hawk

Geoff provided a short update on the cbe dev mailing list saying that he's going to be unofficially providing ps3 linux support in his spare time as he's moved into a new position within Sony: http://lists.ozlabs.org/pipermail/cbe-oss-dev/2010-March/007236.html Nite_Hawk

Indeed, the PS3 is reasonably close to being a decent media hub already. A decent web browser and support for a couple more codecs would probably placate most critics. Nite_Hawk

Getting more off-topic, but it would be really interesting to know exactly what the politics were around cell at IBM and Sony, and how much of that is affecting the kinds of decisions that we are now seeing made: http://www.dvhardware.net/article32299.html Nite_Hawk

I hadn't realized that the import taxes on game consoles had been changed in 2004 making the issue irrelevant. I saw that the final ruling on the PS2 didn't happen until 2006 so assumed Sony was continuing to fight for it at that point: http://m.reghardware.co.uk/2006/06/20/ps2_not_a_pc/ At...

For what it's worth, I emailed Geoff to ask him if Sony is cutting off all linux cell development at this point and he basically said he can't comment. This combined with IBM cancelling the next Gen cell blades and it looks like Cell is as good as dead. Nite_Hawk

Oh give it a rest. Sony was looking for an excuse. Back when it was released they wanted the PS3 classified as a computer for tax evasion purposes. They did the same thing with the PS2 when they released linux on it. Ken Kutaragi might have honestly been trying to make the PS3 into a home...

Give me a break. He was a talented artist and a tragic man. If you remember the man only for his art and not his controversy you show him less respect than someone who remembers him as he actually was, both his good and bad. Nite_Hawk
