Whitehats Pwn Lizard Squad; Police Arrests Multiple Suspects

Windows are fragile, too. Should we be praising jackasses that throw bricks through windows "to remind people how fragile" they are?

Choice of aspect ratio for games *spawn

That's about 7:5, which is wider than 4:3. And at 110 and 250 degrees, the visible area is beyond the limits of the given circle, again suggesting that something wider than even 7:5 is preferable.

The white area is only the area of depth perception. Most people are still using 2d displays, so you have to use the grey area. By my reckoning, the grey area has an aspect ratio of 7:5, which is between 16:9 and 4:3. Of course this is for straight-ahead vision. If eyes are...

Native FP16 support in GPU architectures

But they don't have similar L1 cache. The i5 has twice the L1 that the Core 2 does. That makes a big difference. Double the L1 of the Core 2 duo and you probably get near identical performance with the i5. What Intel is great at is using advanced processes to pack huge numbers of...

Where Does Gaming Go From Here?

There is probably only one or possibly two generations left of improvements to go in terms of image quality, detail, and frame rate, IMO. After that I would think better physics and AI are going to be targets for improvement. The need for better AI might even motivate a new architecture.

Native FP16 support in GPU architectures

Problems do crop up, though, when customers begin to focus on on what they think is a single important feature of a product like FP ops per second. Do most customers really know that there might be a difference between 16-bit floats or 32-bit floats or 64-bit floats? Many do not. It's that...

Native FP16 support in GPU architectures

You've got a point. The problem for engineers is that they get paid to build things that are essentailly spec'd by ignorant customers. Marketing doesn't bother worrying about this. The customer has the money and the company needs the money. Marketing is there to make this happen...

GDC paper on compute-based Cloth Physics including CPU performance

That's what I thought too -- the difference in the CPU results is explained in part by the difference in memory type, though the XBone's higher clock probably plays a part, too. Still, using GDDR5 seems to give the PS4's GPU nearly twice the speed. No wonder the XBone settled for a less...

Choice of aspect ratio for games *spawn

Your 4:3 image is 5% larger than the 1920x1080 image. I think the 4:3 image needs to be 1663x1247.

Choice of aspect ratio for games *spawn

Maybe, but I remember the efforts of broadcasters to educate the public concerning letterboxing in the days before HD. The problem was that many viewers believed that the dark areas at the top and bottom of the screen were hiding part of the picture and would call the station to report what they...

Choice of aspect ratio for games *spawn

There's one thing that's being overlooked: horizontal visual scanning of a scene is common. The eyes move easily to left and right. Rarely is a scene scanned vertically. For small displays of old, 4:3 made sense since there wasn't much of a display to scan. As displays grew in size, screen...

    Response time compensation I think.

Crippled DP performance holds back gamers or not?

Anyone else wish for a 48-bit word size? It seems like the sweet spot for so much. Deep color with 16 bits per channel, audio processing with 24-bit PCM stereo pairs, fixed point 32.16 formats, and of course a float with a nice sized mantissa would all seem to work well with a 48-bit word.

    i7 3820 or Bulldozer fx 8150

Personally I'd go with the i7, mainly because I run applications where single thread performance is important. The other thing is cache handling. The i7-3820 has smart cache. One busy thread that needs lots of fast memory can potentially use all 10MB of it. The dozer arch is more limited.

    Is PS4/XONE CPU a bottleneck?

Maybe most of that ram can be used as a kind of render ahead cache for textures procedurally generated by otherwise idle cores.
