CPU Security Flaws MELTDOWN and SPECTRE

https://www.anandtech.com/show/12533/intel-spectre-meltdown Even Core 2 45nm has now been promised to get those patches.

    Windows 10 [2018]

The thing is, I still have tons of Core 2 and Athlon II PCs around me where, thanks to 4GB RAM (purchased long ago), a $60 SSD, and the death of flash ads, it is more than fast enough. Giving it a new CPU+RAM+MB combo would cost an additional $150 or thereabouts. So yes, there is a difference...

    The AMD Execution Thread [2018]

But in any case, the key issue is pairing a $220 CPU with a $75 CPU. We need to see a comparison with $70CPU+$100GPU or similar.

CPU Security Flaws MELTDOWN and SPECTRE

About that Windows tool's output: why is it that some systems do mention PCID, some do not, and none have it enabled? (as far as I can find) + at least yesterday, I did not find explanations for what does each line mean. Also, Intel mentions releasing updates. Presumably, microcode updates. I...

CPU Security Flaws MELTDOWN and SPECTRE

Yeah, Intel's messaging is plain weird. There clearly is a real issue that does specifically affect Intel more than at the very least AMD. So statements shifting blame/saying "nothing to see here" are actually the premiere reason to avoid buying Intel products in the future. I can live with...

CPU Security Flaws MELTDOWN and SPECTRE

The thing I do not get the most is the glee I hear. "I will never buy Intel again", "Intel was cheating all the time", etc. Mistakes happen to anyone. There is no way of proving that there are no hidden issues in AMD CPUs (at the very least, IMHO, no practical way). And, well, I do actually...

Nvidia EULA limits GeForce Data Center Usage *fork*

Yes, but they did explicitly state that this only applies to vehicles purchased from that point onward. Previously purchased vehicles can still be used commercially and charge from Superchargers. OTOH, if CSI's guess is true and Sakura did mislead Nvidia, well, then they just plainly mislead...

Nvidia EULA limits GeForce Data Center Usage *fork*

I do not have any issue in general with them saying that Geforce drivers cannot be used in datacenter. I do have an issue with them changing this after someone has already purchased the product. Could Sakura argue that their existing cards should be permitted DC use, while agreeing that future...

Intel Kaby Lake + AMD Radeon product *spin-off*

I actually do not understand why Intel is choosing to do this, instead of spinning their own, more powerful, Gen GPU? One thing I can imagine is a customer request (e.g. Apple).

Intel "Coffee Lake" (2017/2018, 14 nm)

I am an end user. I feel that Intel does care about me. These are not the days of the Pentium4->Core transition, when there were real gains to be had from upgrading the CPU two generations. I lose the ability to upgrade, which is basically useless to me. I gain a more modern platform (no need...

Intel "Coffee Lake" (2017/2018, 14 nm)

I count it at the expensive end. And in any case, 1600 did not make my future PC cheaper. Quad i3 did (though yes, I would like a cheaper motherboard; but unlike Ryzen, the i3 does not need a GPU).

Intel "Coffee Lake" (2017/2018, 14 nm)

There is zero doubt that perf/price improved massively as long as the task concerned is parallelizable. And unlike Ryzen, where the huge improvement was at high prices & high core counts, the most massive improvement with CoffeeLake is at low core counts & low price points.

Intel "Coffee Lake" (2017/2018, 14 nm)

https://www.anandtech.com/show/11869/intel-announces-8th-generation-coffee-lake-hex-core-desktop-processors For those who wanted 4 cores: $170 for 3.0/3.5 (base/boost) becomes $117 for 3.6 (base, no boost) – very clear gain. For those who need really high clocks, prices may have increased (but...

AMD RyZen CPU Architecture for 2017

Could it maybe be 4x4-alive-core does? Or is there a statement somewhere that the 8 cores are on the same die?
