Exactly what kind of work does the cpu do in a console?

For 99% of the games out there: game logic, ai, streaming management, animation calculation, audio playback, issuing draw and state commands for the GPU, handling data for GPU, receiving input, managing HUD, physics calculations. Everything in a game short of drawing triangles and pixels. Just...

    AMD: R8xx Speculation

    Every bit of it :-)

    AMD: R8xx Speculation

Why? All cores are the same, so it's a perfectly reasonable comparison.

    Nvidia GT300 core: Speculation

That's rather impressive you missed it, considering you wrote it :P http://forum.beyond3d.com/showpost.php?p=1341102&postcount=2507

    Nvidia GT300 core: Speculation

Is anyone else a bit perturbed at the fact that [h]'s PR contact said "They are giving the GT300 Enthusiast cards everything they've got"?

Why SSAA and DX10 cen't work together In HD58X0 ?

Uh, am I alone in thinking "Why on earth are you doing image quality comparisons using a dithered 256-colour GIF?" ?

Oh...well, it's not just bricks, you also have roofing tiles and such this time :P

    AMD: R8xx Speculation

Actually, ATi showed a demo comparing the quality and performance of normal mapping v. POM, v. tessellation, and tessellation ended up being faster by a rather significant margin. Tessellation also looks better in the end as well, because you also have a different silhouette due to the...

    AMD: R8xx Speculation

While I'm super-psyched about true angle-invariance in AF, that excitement is instantly quelled by the fact that there'll probably be no difference. Aliasing due to crap AF has been trounced by the enormous amount of aliasing we have due to materials doing non-linear calculations. It's still a...

How will NVidia counter the release of HD5xxx?

I wonder how many of the PhysX users is due to Unreal.

The End of The GPU Roadmap

Hmm, yes, I neglected to consider that. Despite that, though, I can still easily envision such a future one way or another.

The End of The GPU Roadmap

Well, one thing that would definitely work rather well is tessellation down to the (near?) micropolygon level (see: REYES, http://graphics.stanford.edu/papers/mprast/rast_hpg09.pdf ) and have the vertex shader do what we normally have pixel shaders do: Calculate lighting calculations, do texture...

    16 Core Larrabee ?

Fwiw, I'd be surprised if the PS4's cell was just 32 SPUs. It's probably going to be a couple more times than that.

The performance of the tesselation in action is quite a bit better than I was expecting!

    Nvidia GT300 core: Speculation

It's NOT a necessary evil, that's the thing. If you make the progression such that certain areas are intended for certain levels of play, then auto-leveling isn't a problem. See: World of Warcraft (and many other MMOs), inFamous, GTA,, or...aw screw it, ALMOST EVERY OTHER DECENT OPEN-WORLD GAME...
