I must've missed the ATi quote exclaiming "This is our answer to G80!" Could you supply a link...? I rather thought that upcoming R600 was to fulfill that role...;)

This sort of thing reminds me of so many mistaken impressions I see everyday that proclaim that AMD's current FX70/72 is AMD's "answer" to Core 2--when about everybody knows that--or at least should know--that AMD won't be "answering" Core 2's competitive knock on the door until K8L, as it is commonly known, arrives later this year. Meanwhile, FX7x, etc., is just AMD continuing to knock on Intel's Netburst door for as long as Intel is continuing to sell them. I mean, it isn't like the only thing people are buying from Intel these days are 64-bit Conroes, is it? Intel's last and recent quarterly report seemed to inform about that pretty nicely, I think.

Likewise, I think it is more than clear that nVidia is still selling a whole lot more than G80, and people are still buying a whole lot other than G80 from nVidia, and so in that context--especially the "SLI" or "Crossfire" context (you know, those "enthusiasts" among us who bought dual-PCIe graphics-slot motherboards and think *anything* short of filling both slots at the same time is a complete waste of time...;))--it seems to me that this foray from ATi just might have some common sense behind it.

Personally, a single graphics slot for a single graphics device is quite enough for me, and I'm having no problem waiting on R600, and certainly am not confusing this Crossfire marketing package with R600. I think the following are truisms:

Crossfire is not R600; SLI is not G80. Where's the beef?

    Where's R600? <--There's the beef, R600 is AWOL.

(I think the meaning of the comment "ATI's answer to G80 untill R600 gets here?" was pretty clear. If I want to buy a graphics tomorrow, and I want to compare the most performant solutions that NVIDIA and ATI have available tomorrow, not in two months time but tomorrow, what would I be looking at?)

Sorry for the OT but is performant (meaning "having high performance") officially part of the english language or is it just something tech people made up?
