Well I haven't done extensive testing but I can't do 650 on my XT in 3dmark06.

Here are my impressions after having an ATI X1900 XTX for about 5 days now.

    - the fan in 2D is the same as my 7800 GTX using the reference cooler
    - in games the fans are about the same, until the 1900's revs up after a few minutes of play. It's not incredibly noisy, but it is noticably louder than the 7800's.
    - at full speed the fan is insanely loud, as loud as an infamous black label delta from the AXP days, luckily it only ever hits this speed as Windows boots
    - I run dual monitors, and the setup isn't quite as nice as Nvidia's. My second monitor flickers occasionally for no apparent reason. As it does this my mouse becomes unresponsive for about half a second. It is extremely annoying when it happens in games, as my framerate takes a nose-dive to maybe 5 fps for a second or two.
    - BF2 plays nice at 1280x1024 with 6X AA and 16X HQ AF

I suppose if I had my case/system open -- basically at ear level on my desk -- well it may bother me.

The X1900XT looks sharper. Check the guys helmet .. on the Nvidia card it looks blurry.

I think we need a less compressed image to do a better comparison.

    LOL!!!

If you need uncompressed images to make out a difference, then I tend to say it's negligable...

I can clearly see compression artifacts in the trinibwoy images, and those are more apparent in the object borders, where you try to find the differences in an antialiasing IQ comparison image.

I think they both look equally good.

That might be because I went from BMP -> PNG -> JPG  . The PNG's were too large but I had no time to redo them so I just converted to JPG and uploaded them anyway. Will redo them later.

Did anybody notice these strange artifacts?

(I didn't create the first screenshot, so I'm not sure about the driver version)

Don't know why my screenshot is so much smaller in size but I went from bmp to jpg using mspaint and this what I got, 231k compared to 982k in NiteHawk's shot.

    Hi trinibwoy,

I used the gimp to convert my screenshot and picked the highest quality setting for saving the jpeg that I could that was under the file size limit. you can download a windows port of the gimp for free here if you want to try using it:

no-X, the only difference I see is in the smoke. It might be that R580 has fixed whatever bug/issue R300 had with smoke (first uncovered with AquaMark 3--yes, underwater smoke  ).

trini, try IRFanView(.com). It's just a really handy viewer and cropper/saver, and it lets you set the level of jpeg quality/compression. I'm guessing MSPaint uses more compression, but I haven't used it since I found IRFanView. :)

Your shot is also at a higher dpi: 96 vs. 72dpi. I'm guessing that's independent of compression, but it probably means a bigger file size at the same quality level. IRFanView let's you control that, too.

Pete: I don't think this is correct. Here is one more screenshot (from Aquamark 3.0 + X1900XT). You can clearly see the banding:

I'm getting this with X1300 as well. I didn't notice this with X1900 XT (+sample drivers). Maybe it's the 6.2's that are doing it. Using 3DMark05

Check out the dust, it's...colorized (greenish / redish splatters)

OK, I see it now. 16-bit color flashbacks!
