Ignore the offered update, go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10 and click "Download tool now" and use it to download the ISO (you can either store it on your HDD or make DVD or USB installation media)

It can be installed on formatted hdd and then you can activate it provided you have a key (I think w7 keys are accepted?)

Im not an expert, but I've installed win10 twice, both times with a fresh install. Though both times I've had more than one HDD/SSD in the system, I'm thinking perhaps MS checks the other HDD's to see if the licenses are valid.
One thing to watch out for though (I wrote about this a few months ago here) In the process of installing it from USB (DVD also no doubt) it will reboot (so dont walk away whilst its installing), you must quickly enter the Bios and disable the USB (or pull it out) or else win 10 will get reinstalled again, i.e. it ignores that you've already installed it. They might of fixed this though by now, as its a nutty error on MS's part to make.

So maybe you can update w7 -> w10 , write the key down and then format + re-enter?
At least on retail keys if you've updated Win7/8 machine to Win10 once, you can do fresh install of Win10 completely without a key and it'll activate once installation is done, I don't see why it would be any different on OEM keys

So I've run into a rather odd issue.

I've found Win 10 seems to somehow have significantly reduced authority over killing mis-behaving programs previously but now its reached a new level :runaway:
I was playing Total War: Rome 2 yesterday when it stopped working (tends to do that after many hours of game play), the normal 'game has stopped working' dialogue came up & I told it to kill the program, which it failed to do.
So I went to Task Manager & tried to kill it from there but it failed to kill, gives an 'access denied' error!
Next I shut down the PC & went to bed.
But today after re-starting the PC while the window is now gone, the damn .exe is still showing as running in Task Manager and prevents me from playing other games/re-starting Rome2.

Any ideas how to fix this? :?:

Edit: OK so again I turned off (via Start), powered back on & same.
But then Restart worked.
Am baffled.

You also can disable hybrid shutdown on the classic power option control panel.

Microsoft has been doing this since w8.0
