Or just use graphics hardware scaling... NVIDIA has a driver option and I'm hoping ATI does by now as well. There's more than enough hardware there to do something trivial like scaling.

Some people who tell me that non-native resolutions look bad are using bad internal scalars definitely, but others are just comparing to using the native resolution on that monitor, which is obviously going to look better as it's higher! Compared to a CRT at the same resolution, I don't see a lot of difference when using NVIDIA hardware scaling on my 24" 1920x1200 monitor for most resolutions. The same goes for my 1080p LCD TV with its internal scaling, so I'm not really buying the "native resolution" argument nowadays TBH.

Back to the original point, I think another one of the reasons why those options aren't present in a lot of games nowadays is that the average gamer doesn't (and shouldn't necessarily have to) know what they mean and could very well set them to stupid values. Refresh rate was a particular problem in the past, so people really try to auto-detect that as much as possible. Vsync is default-on in a bunch of games nowadays (such as Company of Heroes for instance) which is probably quite reasonable, as long as paired with Triple Buffering.

That said, I've seen some games that even with TB apparently "on" still are noticeably more jittery with vsync enabled, so since jitter is often a much more objectionably problem than tearing (at least on LCDs), lots of games also just default to vsync off.

I don't get your problem, there are many tools for nailing V-sync on boot as you wish out there, even resoultion based.

V-sync yes, but dx10 refreshartes are still tough to control. Crysis, GOW and Hellgate refuse to work with anything other then 60 hz in dx10 on the HD3870X2.

Yeah, I reported the problem to AMD about Crysis and 60hz in Vista. They're looking into it. :)

    (3870s crossfired here)

Ok. I have submitted some thoughts on UT3 too. Hopefully these thing can fixed quickly.

Well, they probably looking at it only because the 60-Hz issue in Crysis DX10 is still alife and kicking like a true survivor.

I have no problem running any resolution or refresh rate on my FW900 I want using Vista, Company of Heroes is minimized right now running at 1600x1000@100hz. Create custom resolutions and refresh rates using the Nvidia CP and Vista will use the highest one with recent Nvidia drivers (it was 60hz hell before but it's all good now). I haven't used ATI cards in a long time so I don't know if the CCC has custom resolutions and refresh rate override options.

With nV-GPU's I never had these problems in the first place. But I'm running two HD4870's and nothing is changed. Also GOW dx10 is still playing in stroboscopemode.

Refreshlock Vita won't work on these two ones. It's driving me mad. If this is the sign of how dx10 will play on ATI HW, I have to say goodbuy for now. I'll never game on an LCD in current state.

And it has nothing to do with CRT's why can I choose all the way up to 150 hz in 2d? But for some reason it change my refreshrate when gooing to 3d (d3d) even when desktop and game is using the same res.

Well looks like I'm sticking with NV gpus until FED or something better than CRT comes along (I agree 100% about gaming on LCD), no way I'm giving up refresh rate overrides in 3d. RefreshForce and RefreshLock never worked in Vista for me so I stuck with XP until NV added custom refresh rates and resolutions to the Vista driver.

Someone over on the NV forums had made another tool called Direct Refresh that worked for some people (but not me), here is a link maybe you will have some luck.

This is a lot of monitor for the money. I'm well pleased. Ghosting, what's that?...;) It puts my former 20" Sony Trinitron to shame. In fact, I recently sold that one off to a friend at work for $100...:D Great monitor, really.

I'm not sure if all 30" lcds do but at least my cinema hd display has 2 native resolutions. 2560 by 1600 and 1280 by 800. It doesnt scale for that lower res, rather it draws 4 pixel groups for all pixels. This makes it look sharper.

So while scaling from a native 1920x1200 resolution to 1280x720 might look bad, maybe from 2560x1600 to 1280x720 doesn't look quite as bad for that reason. (scaling needed only for one dimension)

To always get the highest supported refresh rate, use Rivatuner's refresh rate injector feature. You make a rule (say, all resolutions over 640x480 and to 1600x1200 in 16bit, 24bit and 32bit) and it gets applied when Rivatuner detects a full screen app changing res and refresh rate. Rivatuner has to stay resident for it to work, but I used it all the time when I had a CRT and it worked wonders.

Thanx for the response, but none of them seem to work with Crysis and GOW in dx10. I thought this would be fixed by now....

I had similar problems with >60hz in dx10 but with a nvidia card. RefreshLock worked for me back then.

  16. Well it's blatantly obvious on my windows desktop when I'm running in anything other than a non-native mode. It is less noticeable in games but it's still there that's for sure.

Way back when I used a CRT, I used Multires to lock refresh rates:
    http://www.entechtaiwan.com/util/multires.shtm

Worked 99% of the time. I think there was the odd game here or there that didn't work, but those situations were few and far between. As for vsync and triple buffering, can't you force those in the driver?
