    Since when? By who?

All games are buggy. Even q3 was buggy at realease time.

On the other hand it has nothing to do with graphics, generally speaking.

And they're going to make the first mannered, reusable etc personal spacecraft because J. Carmack said that.
Actually he is reincarnation of Jesus, Moses and Mohamed in the very same body, at the very same time. Let's get this straight: he is God.

    Definitely. :D

LOL I am glad you have finally seen they light my combative brother.

On the other hand the doom3 engine has been essentially done for a very long time and the artwork is the main thing lagging behind.

Now to be honest like I said before I think the main thing is the artwork that makes peoples decision on whether they think a game is visualy stunning or not...

He is allowed to have an opinion that id "is known for being abe to produce equal/better IQ for the same power in the hardware" and you are allowed to differ but just because you argue vociferously doesn't make you right.

And the only point you raised that I can actually agree with was in regards to this comment "doom 3 will likely be polished because John Carmack is saying hes glad that he has the time to perfect the code. "

JC isn't making anything to polish the game that is the artists job so him saying that is more like saying. The engine will be as efficient as he can make it, or have few errors since he had time to address issues that have arisen, but it has little to do with being polished.

Since when fragment shader are considered as artworks?

I agree but how is this coming to the 'best engine' question? :)

Perhaps you should read my posts again - and try to interpret first and be sarcastic later.

(Have you actually realized I pointed out there's no logic in his posts? I doubt it...)

    I'm touched.
    So?

(I'm trying to believe you aren't saying that you do agree with him on the rest of the matter...)

    Edit: grrr, typos...

Far Cry is everything but buggy graphics wise. Maybe if you run it with a GF FX, but then again if you have an FX you didn't make an educated choice when you bought it.

That was a lot of assumptions. Don't take it personally if you happen to own an FX though.;)

I started to hate corridore shooters (even if they take the roof off) and close fog planes a long time ago. Which rules out anyone but Crytek for me.

No I don't agree that it was finished in 2001, but his first statement is opinion and as such he is entitled to it just as you are entitled to your opinion

So we all realize you think he is far from being a good engine programmer. I think you are entitiled to your opinion, but I don't see enough game engines that surpass what he has created to think he is far from being a good engine designer. Really I mean how many others are out there trouncing what id puts out? And why are they so succesful at marketing their engine when they charge more than most other developers and offer less support? I guess their inferior product appeals to a lot of people.

Well it is more efficient then CryEngine and the D3 engine. Painkiller probably has the most efficient engine, but HL2 blows it away in features.

At some point you have to stop increasing the level of detail and concentrate on finalizing your game and getting it out the door. Obviously new and better hardware gets released all the time, but you cannot keep delaying a game whenever that happens to make it look nicer. If you do that it will never get released, aka DNF. Remember the Hi-def pack that Valve released for HL? I wouldn't be surprised if they did that again for HL2 in a years time or so.

Who is that 'we'? I'm kinda disgusted on this cheap try to derail the subject and make up the mood... :rolls:

Tough luck. As of today you can find a few.

The last engine we saw from JC is Quake III, correct me if I'm wrong.
Now it's your turn: name a few of today's main engines which is NOT better than his Q3 engine.

    1. IMO Epic's Unreal engine has the same amount of clients.
    2. So many lazy developer studio are out there - what's new here?
    3. Big sales != quality.

There are some exception like CoD but they're rather became hit because of their gameplay and artwork - generally speaking Q3-engine is a waaaaay outdated and far behind most of the competition.

If you don't agrre on this, we all need to realize you probably have something serious disability which makes you fully incapable understand that Q3 engine is FAR FROM INFERIOR.

(Seems you like to use these bombastic words (ie 'inferior')regarding JC but it's rather silly, believe me.)

Ah, I almost forgot... FYI: good engine programmer != very good in game engines

    I hope it helps.

PS: If you got energy to blow out of context one of my old posts from somewhere deeeep, it would be nice if you would STOP intentonally misunderstand or rather simply provoke me. It's pretty cheap, sad, silly and kinda 'rough' implication.
Let me put one thing straight: I'm sick of this stupid JC-cult. We haven't seen anything but a pretty crappy alpha which I don't wanna take as a product 'coz I respect his work. Besides this I can't see anything about D]|[ but sshots and dumb argues like 'based on track record' and similar crap. Same thing with the Newell-cult and others.

so when is the issue? Now? Farcry is nice. I always liked the Q3 over the UT look, but thats my subjective. Valve... its neat but not even Q3, UT2003 is a bit to shinny and bright, but its very cool. 2004, is better, (and game play to). So for what you can buy, its Crytec, Epic Id valve, in that order now. For shear volume of games it is id hands down, but Epic is prettier. Will revisit this when i can play the new ones.

True .. and i'm near mtl and i have a friend who works at Ubisoft .. and he knows a lot of things about Crytek .. and the game in the near alpha looked like 3 times better than now .. but the current computers wasnt able to run the game correctly at all with the HUGE outdoor .. try to do the exact same graphic as Doom 3 in a Far Cry Map ... try it now ! gogo it will be fun to see the slide-show ( and btw not saying that to you London but at XxStratoMasterXx ).

That is only a month ago man that is not way old and deep. The fact is you think JC is over rated you say he is a poor game engine designer.

Quake 3 is old and is inferior to thing programmed 4 years later, wow quake 1 is inferior to quake3 as well it is amazing isn't it progress. Quake3 however held up way longer and better than UT did it scaled way better as well. Yes it is dated now but it still is making decent games.

Now perhaps you are not a native english speaker and this is why people misconstrue what you say, but beleive me it is easy to misunderstand you. If I really wanted to attack you believe me there are much worse things I could quote, I was only trying to quote what you had said about J.C. so we could see where you are coming from in your opinions.

edit: BTW if you are not a native neglish speaker your english is excellent, I wasn't saying it was bad, simply that it could explain why I misunderstand what you are saying.

ID makes the best engines for a few reasons.

On of them is, i remember back in the day quake 3 running on my old celeron and voodoo (2?) pci.

If quake 3 were released today, it would come in at "ok graphics" Thats pretty amazing for the age of the engine.

At the time, no one could get that kind of quality from older hardware. Sure unreal tournament looked good, so they were fairly close to being even.
But epic and id pwn all.

Id, hands down. In all my years of gaming their engines have consistantly looked the best/played the smoothest.

I know there are/were better looking game engines out, but if I can't run a game smooth I don't care how good it's graphics are...it looks like shit to me.

As much as I've been knocking D3 and the Carmack lately, I still tip my hat to Id as the best game engine maker around.

I never said that. Be accurate or don't say anything.

Which has nothing to do with JC or id: the artwork makes these games decent, as I've already said above.

Again: it's not 'people' it's you. :p
I never had any problem like that despite the fact English is my second language. (BTW, third is the latin. ;))

Last few years I did not have any problem... :D

I'm really scared, you can imagine that...

Go ahead - at least you can get some nice ban from the moderator. :p

That point was made around the fact he always did prefer certain (hardware) vendors over other and I think he still does which is absolutely disgust me - that was actually my point over there IIRC. It's too vague to say he is far from being good because of this, I admit - but that's why I hate when somebody blow out my post its context as you did. Generally speaking I'm sick of certain people pro-NV and pro-JC posts (as well as pro-ATI or pro-Newell, of course).

I do prefer some of them over the other, like everybody else does but for God's sake: it's very boring and annoying to see these ID software is known for being abe to produce equal/better IQ for the same power in the hardware and doom 3 will likely be polished because John Carmack is saying hes glad that he has the time to perfect the code and similar silly arguments.
My posts are against these kid-like non-posts, not JC or you. :)

Thanks but it's far from excellent. Actually I've immigrated few years ago (from East-Eu) and I'm still planning to polish myself but appearently I never gonna have free time to take some courses... ;)

    Edit: typo and smiley

Hmm, so we are at "best engine = best looking game" again? :p
