I use Vista x64 SP1 as gaming OS for obvious reasons (RAM, the future etc). In my gaimng VM I use Windows XP SP3.

Ya podxts are awesome for recording guitars if you dont mind the lack of tubes, and it also makes a killer soundcard, especially for headphone listening, since it has a *really* powerfull headphone amp and obviously damn good DACs(btw they're 24bit, 48Khz), as most soundcards for recording would. It's funny that alot of home audio equipment is overated as far as wattage goes and often uses cheap parts but musicial equipment is often underrated in wattage(i.e guitar/bass amps and obviously PA systems) and usally uses good components.

I use Windows XP Profession (so 32 bit). No need for over 2 GB of memory as of yet. Runs faster on my own tests than Windows Vista (both 32 bit and 64 bit). And by the looks of it, I'll probably completely skip Windows Vista until the next OS.

I'm amazed how many Vista 64bit users there are. I'm on 32bit myself but fully intend to go 64bit on my next upgrade.

Suryad man, i'm amazed how you can consider paying ~$1000 for the most powerful DX10 setup in existance and then limit yourself via software to DX9 for the sake of an extra $100 or so!

If you're running more than one video card, Vista will perform better than XP in just about every case. Now how much "better" will depend on the app, sometimes it's pretty close to nil, but other times it can be pretty substantial.

Running XP for older games, Vista x64 for newer ones (i.e. DX10 titles).

I get that a lot actually. Its not because I dislike Vista, I am just too lazy to go buy it and vLite it and tweak it and install it and reinstall the drivers and games and all that. XP x64 just works right now though I cant burn optical media for some reason. I think there is a bug with some SATA Liteon drives and XP x64 but I dont burn any optical media at all anymore since the advent of external drives. So yes chalk it up to laziness more than anything. I do genuinely want to try it out but I just loathe the thought of having to install everything. Maybe when some more DX 10 games come out oh wait DX 11 is coming out next year or something like that isn't it?

Vista 64 might be great for games, but using it for everything else daily as well would drive me mad.

And turning off all the irritating stuff would more or less make it into a copy of Windows 2000, with ClearType support and support for more than 2 GB of memory.

Ubuntu offers a much lower threshold, although it isn't useable to run the newest DX10 games.

So, it makes a lot of senst to me from Microsoft to limit DX10 support to Vista.

I often find myself in Ubuntu for a lot of games. It runs older Windows stuff with WINE (and has dosbox) better than Windows Vista does (if at all). The games don't even have to be all that old, a few years back even.

Other than that, Vista 32 bit. Probably should move to 64 bit, but I've only got 4GB of ram, so no big hurry.

SLI'd 8800 GT's in Vista 64 and it owns

Crysis RAM usage is over 2gig ( No go for 32bit )
    Quake 1 Over 3gig ( No go for 32bit )
    Half Life 2 between 2-3gig ( No go for 32bit )

32bit is slowing getting to the point were its limiting game performance and texture size!!

Quake I 3GB? And I who tought Iran it good with 32Mb RAM!

I assume you have FF mod for HL2 for the vanilla HL2 runs great maxxed at 1gig RAM and Crysis benefits of more than 2gig in 64bit mode due to texture streaming being disabled automatically.

A perfect example why all the texel density and shader complexity in the world can't match continuous UV space.

I have to say that the Quake shots above prove that you can't texture your way out of a supremely low-poly environment.

Also, 3 GB memory usage? For that? That is obscene and wasted IMHO.
