wd velociraptor gaming advantage

what kind of performance gains in gaming can i expect to see in a system with a wd velociraptor over the same system with a regular 7200rpm drive. I know they are upto 35% faster than the old raptors drives but how does that actually impact on gaming performance?

any reviews or websites actually dealt with this particular issue?
 
well if you have enough ram your HD shouldn't be reading much at all during gameplay so it's not like your going to see better FPS. Best you could expect would be better load times and a generally more responsive system.
 
None. Hard drives only speed loading times. If your system is so improperly balanced as to see benefit from a faster HD during gaming, you're already playing a slideshow.
 
arnt they also very loud ?
not to mention hugely expensive cost = 5x per mb than other drives

I think you are right Davros it is a heatsink. As long as they are not louder than my raptors I am sold. But seriously hold off a little bit and grab a pair of those Intel/Micron SSDs that are gonna be released. Stunning performance numbers!
 
The heatsink is likely unnecessary. Its true purpose is to adapt the 2.5" form-factor drive to the standard desktop form-factor of 3.5". Turning it into a heatsink as well allowed WD to cater to the enthusiast crowd aesthetically.

Wonder why they went with the 2.5 inch form factor and not a 3.5 inch because that would allow for a higher data transfer rate would it not?

There is an increase in temperature, certainly. Not enough to put the drive in danger, though. There's not an electrical or mechanical component in those drives that can't withstand the temperatures shown, even under prolonged, heavy usage. The hottest points measured are on the PCB, being ICs. ICs can withstand much higher temps than shown there. Also, the ~50 degree drive temps are quite normal for a modern performance-oriented hard drive. Heck, my dual 7200.10 250GB drives with a 120mm fan blowing on them 3 inches away read in the 50's normally.
 
I thought they were selling the same drive to industry w/o the heatsink so they could fit more drives in the same volume? Of course they may have better cooling.
 
The velociraptor is nothing more than an enterprise drive with "enthusiast" dressings (and tweaked firmware, if you believe WD).

Note: this is not a knock on the drive itself. It really is a fine drive, albeit horribly over-priced.

My experience - in the sled it's horrible, out of the sled it's not so horrible if you turn the AAM to quiet mode, maybe as quiet as one of the bigger Samsung or WDs (definitely quieter than the 150GB Raptor by a long chalk). I've put mine in an enclosure and seeks are still audible. I'm tempted to put the enclosure in an enclosure, because I'm fussy about noise, but that's me.
 
I have a 150gig Raptor. Can barely stand the thing compared to modern 7200s. However, I have had 7200s that were louder than a Raptor. :) And it wasn't just seek noise, but dental-drill esque ball bearing whine. OMG, I can not deal with that noise anymore.

To solve the seek vibration of HDDs, I pondered options deeply, and pondered ways to avoid overpriced commercial solutions. I went out to the fabric store and got some elastic cording. I wrap the stuff around inside the drive bay and make a sort of web for the HDD to sit in. You obviously need to have open space in the bay to do this, so the bay needs to be a rail-style one. This mechanically disconnects the drive from the case and basically eliminates the transfer of vibration energy. It makes an incredible difference. The Raptor 150 becomes quieter than the unsilenced WD 500gigs in the comp next to it. Muffled clicking is all that is left of the usually case-rattling seeks. This simple method has worked better than any built-in dampening design that I've messed with and no elastic has broken in the years I've been doing this. Watch out though: the ladies at those fabric stores can be rather unaccepting of male invaders who are clueless about how to buy their goods. Bring a female escort, perhaps. ;)

A lot of cases already include rubber bands to mount the HDD away from case. It seems such solutions could increase heat on the HDD though.
