DX8 for Win95 was easy as they never change the driver model.

Yeah, I just mean a system by which IE7 or whatever can track, resume, pause, and maybe even schedule downloads. The way it is now, using IE to download anything is basically the worst method you can possibly use on Windows. I sort of don't buy that MS cares about legal stuff, either. I'm well aware of the cases it's been through, but I think things like web browsers and such were landmark cases. They basically won. IE still comes with every PC. Most ppl in the world still use it for no other reason. MSN still comes with the crap too. Again, not particularly good, but massively popular. WMP, windows firewall, etc... the list goes on and MS not only sells a shit-ton of OSes with them, they sell even more DRM, distribution, and marketing with those tools, and it all could theoretically be illegal.

Question - I have a 6800GS, which runs in quiet mode (low fan speed) at desktop in WinXP, and spins up to aeroplane speeds in 3D games. Does your Vista desktop usage spin up the fan - assuming your 6600 has the same system?

Been using a Mac from the start, and I think it's great so many are deciding to give OS X a chance, even if they don't stay with it.

As for Vista, it has been a little startling watching it get closer to release, mostly because of it's striking similarity in terms of visuals and all the little odds and ends that have been nicked from OS X.

I suspect both ati and nvidia may account for that in their vista drivers...
So it wont spin up on the desktop.

Unfortunately it keeps my 7600GT fan going full-bore the entire time, hopefully Nvidia will remedy that with future drivers. It can't possibly be stressing the GPU that much.

Do note that the the betas are likely not stripped of all the debug information -- crash reports would be far less useful otherwise. Making the binaries that much slower.

I got the new 'pre RC-1' release installed just today.

I'll sum it up by saying....

    it's great :)

I haven't had anything go wrong yet, and it's running very fast. Even IE7, which previously ran like a crippled two legged blind dog chained to a oil rig, now actually works just as well as IE6 under xp. Which is a sortof good thing.

The polish is really showing through. Things look and act much more like a 2006 operating system should.

Only thing I don't like is that when UAC is invoked, it still blacks out the entire screen, when really just the application invoking it should go under.

Overall vista has lots and lots of small things that don't jump out at you till you use them. Simple example is the file copying is just soo much better than xp (finally)

UAC? United Aerospace Corp.? Should we await some D3-style hellspawns coming out of the box then?

Oh, and seeing that picture, I already hate it before even trying. Again the forced "My pictures", "My movies" etc., again the stupid messenger. And I guess it's all of the same resident kind as on XP too. Bleh.

    Ok.

    UAC is User-Access-Control ;-)

And there is no 'My' anymore. In anything. It's just 'Documents', 'Pictures', etc.

And Live messenger was a download, it's not included. And it's also very good. I'm a miranda-IM user, but I have to admit live messenger impressed me.

So what are the evils of DRM? How will it restrict my freedom which everyone cries about so much?

I'm having nothing but trouble trying to get my X800XL AGP card running due to a Code 43 error but other than that Vista is very stable and pretty fast. I just installed 5552 from 5536 and this new version is much snappier. I can't wait for RC1.
